66-4, 3 inch, Hammer/Trigger Question
I have a model 66-4, 3 inch barrel, with s/n BRS 41XX. When I bought the gun it had the flash chromed type hammer and trigger, and I have on hand a case hardened hammer and trigger set that is a "drop-in" fit. I have tried both hammer/trigger combinations in the gun and the trigger pull and timing are good with either set. Which type is should be in the the gun?
Thanks

I would think the case would be correct for a -4, wonder how it got the chromed.

You have a 66-4 in the AYD range? I would have thought AYD would be a 66-2.

I also have a 3 inch model 66-4. Hammer and trigger are both case hardened. Mine is a true double action only and the hammer is bobbed. Appears that it may be a factory job as the back of the hammer where the hammer was bobbed is case hardened also. One of these days I will get it lettered.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in here. Here's my 66-3 3" with the new holster I just had made. Looked for a long time for a holster I liked and finally found a guy to make just what I needed. I like it so much I will have another made for the 66-1 2 1/2". Yeah, I know it will fit in the 3" holster but I want it made to the 2 1/2" just 'cause it seems the right thing to have it fit perfect.
I like a gravity holster without the strap. Anyone agree?

No I don't agree. Every holster I have for "social carry" has a retaining strap, primarily thumbsnap type. This is due to a career's worth of potentially fighting over the weapon on your belt. Or holstering and running. Or climbing. Etc. I'm aware that many, many makers claim that once in, only the wearer can easily pull it out. I'm also aware that convicted felons, in prison, regularly practice their ability to disarm someone carrying in a holster.
Not 100% guarantee that I'll be the only one firing it (but where in life do you get a 100% guarantee?) but it surely ups that odds that I'll be the "firer" rather than "fire-e".
Not trying to flame you out, or thread jack, but you did ask. It certainly appears to be a well made and nice looking holster...but...well, you did ask.
Just my .02.

I did ask! I see every point you make and have nothing but respect for your LEO background. In your day you can expect to be in conflict with the bad guy and pursue confrontation. The considerations for that are far more complicated than my relatively simple defensive considerations.

Thanks for help regarding my question. I have some other guns that are -4 and they have the case colored hammer & trigger, so I will leave the 66 that way.
lhump1961--who made that holster for you? I have 2 of that style for my 1911 guns (Galco) and the S&W M&P (Alessi), but none for revolvers

The holster was made by Ray Cory at Lobo Gun Leather - Home
He will make the holster to fit your exact gun in many available styles and does outstanding work at a price that is hard to beat. It took 5 weeks (a little less) but is so worth the wait IMO. Check out his website.

Model 66-4 3"
I just acquired a model 66-4 with a 3" barrel. It appears to be in excellent condition so hopefully I didn't pay too much at $550. I've heard that the 3" barrel on the 66 is rare. Can anyone tell me just how rare are they or how many were made? Thanks.

according to a factory letter, over 5000 3" 66s were made. 4195 of them are -2s. not many of the other dash #s
congrats on the great deal!!!

A member requested this info via PM...maybe others can use it as well. Is it correct to assume that all Ashland 3" 66s are dash 2s??
I guess my previous post should have read "WELL over 5000 were made"

Two of my three Model 66s are -2s; the 2-1/2" is a -4.
As you can see, the "flavors" of triggers and hammers are mixed. The 4" and 6" guns also have target triggers and hammers and the 4" has a trigger stop.
I prefer the color case-hardened parts over the flash-chromed ones.
