BK Grip Adapters - Square Butt K Frame prototypers wanted
I have begun making grip adapters for square butt K frame models. My mold maker is getting better (or maybe he just got lucky with this one) as they seem to have fewer cosmetic flaws than the J frame models I’ve made in the past.
As I’ve noted before on this forum, my K frame adapter fits just fine on my N frame 1917. Note the images attached - it’s the same adapter on both guns. If this proves to be true for other N frame models as well then I can offer this product for both guns.
In order to verify (or not) my experience, I want the first ones to go to users who have BOTH N frame and square butt K frame guns. I will let the first ones go for $15 instead of the regular $20 (plus $5 shipping, and plus sales tax if you’re in MO) IF you will agree to test ‘em on both guns and let us know how they fit - preferably with pictures.
I would like this initial process to get going as quickly as possible, so I’d like payment by PayPal. For regular sales I’ll take payments by check or money order too, as with the J frame adapters, but for starters I want to get these out into user hands.
SO - If you
1. Have both an N frame and a square butt K frame gun,
2. Are willing to check the adapter on both and report back to this forum, and
3. Are willing to pay by PayPal
then drop me an email at and I’ll reply to the first half dozen or so with payment instructions.
Once I know how I can “advertise” these I’ll do a regular ad in the classified section for ongoing sales.
Thanks for your help with this process.

I'll try it out on both...email sent.
I've followed your threads with interest and I applaud you for attempting to fill this niche market. It would seem you are well on your way.

Model 36, Sq. Butt
The j-frame adapter you sold me fits very well. It also made life easier at the range. With more to hang on to, I didn't need the usual "grip of Death". Recoil seemed lighter as well.
If rhe new ones work as well as those for the j's, you've
done well.
Thank you for letting me participate, TACC1.

email sent. I too am happy to test prototypes and report back here. In fact, I would have offered to test the J-frame prototypes if I had enough pure J-frames. Mostly my small frame guns are I-frames, which are slightly different (though maybe I should order one just to see if the BK grip is capable of fitting both).

Would these fit on to N-Frame revolvers that are round butt, but are wearing square butt conversion grips?

It is my understanding that the frontstrap/trigger guard relationship is the same on both round and square butt N frames, but I don't have a round butt to confirm that.

I'd take a K/N Frame adapter as soon as you get confirmation that they do in fact fit N-frames
This is a great thing you're doing...good luck!

Well, Watch This Space, as they say. There are a half dozen in the mail now, to people with both frames. I hope these are enough so that we will know by the weekend whether my particular N frame is an anomaly (and that these K square butt adapters do not fit N frames in general) or is representative of the breed (and that the adapters will do double duty.)
I'll do a new classified ad when the results are in. Meantime, for those who just want one for a square butt K frame, I have some available at the regular price of $25 delivered ($26.64 for MO residents.) Drop me an email at for payment instructions.

Tried the BK Grip Adapter on K and L Square and N Round and Square. Fit is on par with any of the other brands of adapters. They
all fit each individual gun a little differently.
The same adapter will also fit both the square and round butt N frames.
The difference between the BK K adapter and a Tyler N adapter
is that the Tyler N is a little longer.
Nicely done Kip, I'd say it's a go!

Mine came in today. It fit the K and N equally well, I see no reason to produce two versions. I tried it on a K22 and a mod 58.
The tail end of my adapter was not centered on the grip frame. Looking at the copper tabs, one is just a hair higher than the other, and I think this lets it twist just a bit when the grip screw was tightened down. I am going out of town, but when I have time, I will work the tabs down so that they are uniform top to bottom, and think this will take care of it.
Thanks for taking this own. HOPE YOU GET RICH doing it.

MANY thanks for those pictures. I think it lets everybody see how these will fit. I feel much better offering the same model for both K square and N frame guns now.
And you're right about the lengths - my Tyler #4 is about 1/8 inch longer in the tail than the #3.

Thanks for this, Charlie. As to the tail being slightly off-center, it is NOT the different lengths of the two legs of the copper clip that causes it. I think it's a function of my original having a slightly off-square clip itself. The way the original clips are staked on made it pretty much impossible to adjust, so that's just the way the mold comes out.

Thumbs up
I agree with the others the single size seems to do equally well for both N and K frame revolvers.
Sorry for the peculiar revolvers that I use for modeling the adapter. I mostly have older guns.
Here it is on an old Triple Lock (N-frame).
And on a postwar K-38 Masterpiece:
Just for grins I tried it on a round butt K-frame, in this case a Model of 1902, first change.
The adapter is really quite comfortable on any gun I tried it on. I think Kip probably has a chance to sell several hundred of these over the next many months, and maybe even a few thousand once word starts to get around.
I had previously tested old Pachmayr and S&W grip adapters on some of my revolvers but didn't really like them. The non-metallic pieces just seemed too light and even subject to torquing on the frame if I really muscled my fingers into them. Kip's product seems stiffer, so even though it is still light and doesn't seem to displace as much volume as the aluminum version he seeks to replace, I find them preferable to the older molded adapters I have tried.
Maybe it's just my revolvers, but any adapter I have tried looks as though it would benefit from being custom shaved for a specific frame. In this case, Kip's K-N prototype actually seems to nestle against the trigger guard on the N frame a little better than it does on the slightly smaller frame, though the picture above doesn't seem to show that. It's a subjective feeling I get with the gun in my hand. But if I went through my entire safe, I bet I could find both a K and an N frame revolver that the adapter would fit without any adjustment whatsoever.

Wow - that fit on a round butt K frame is VERY interesting to me, David. If current round butt K frames match your 1902 then this adapter could work for ALL K, L and N frames - yippee from a production, inventory and keeping track of orders standpoint!
Do any of you other prototypers have a round butt K you could try your adapter on to confirm this fit? I would LOVE to be able to offer just the J and K sizes to cover the full current S&W revolver line.
Thanks in advance for any additional confirmation (or not) of round butt K fit.

I tried it on a Model 28, 27, 15 and 17 and it works just fine on them all.
I don't have any round butt guns to try it on...

Round Butt K Frame Fit
I have a friend in town who has a round butt 64, and I tried one of the adapters on it this morning. Photo attached. It looks like a very nice fit, so I think I will offer this K size adapter to fit ALL K, L and N frames. It may not be perfect, but I think it is serviceable enough for the purposes intended.
While I was there, I tried my J frame adapter that has been painted with Krylon Fusion "Hammered Metallic" spray paint (in silver - I think they make a bronze metallic too.) Note that this was solely for purposes of seeing how the COLOR looks on a stainless frame (I don't have a stainless gun - yet - but after handling that particular 64 I have my eye on one). The adapter obviously doesn't fit properly on the larger frame, but frankly I think the color looks pretty good. So for those of you who don't like the look of a black adapter on a stainless gun, this may be a cheap fix (about $6 for a spray can at WalMart.) The only unknown is the durability of the paint - I can't testify to that, but the can says it becomes "fully chip resistant" after 7 days' curing.

New Classified Ad for all BK Grip Adapters
I have just posted a new ad in the classified section, offering both my J and K frame adapters. It's at BK Grip Adapters for S&W J, K, L and N Frames
I have posted payment instructions for single orders, so if you want one the ad will tell you how to order and pay. If you want multiples I'd appreciate an email first, so one buyer doesn't wipe out my inventory.
Thanks for all of the support you folks have given to this project. It would not be nearly as far along without you.
Cheers,
Kip Babington

PLEASE DO NOT ORDER UNTIL THE NEW 2 CLIP MODELS ARE AVAILABLE, WHICH SHOULD BE IN A FEW DAYS TO A WEEK AT MOST.
OLD STOCK OF SINGLE CLIP ADAPTERS IS EXHAUSTED (EXCEPT FOR A FEW SILVER PAINTED J FRAME MODELS) AND I WON'T BE MAKING ANY MORE OF THE OLD MODELS.
THE 2-CLIP VERSION WILL BE SUPERIOR AND YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU WAITED, EVEN IF THE PRICE GOES A LITTLE HIGHER.
THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE.

Kip,
Remember I would like a J-frame in silver, and a K-frame in black when the new adapters are ready for shipping. Let me know when you want payment. Thanks again.

The 2-clip adapters are now available. Revised classified ad is here BK Grip Adapters for S&W J, K, L and N Frames .
An image of a 2-clip J frame adapter is attached.
I've also started a web site where you can order these with a few clicks. It's pretty basic at the moment, but some may find it easier to deal with. Check out www.bkgrips.com
