Altamont Grips
I would like to see some pictures of Altamont grips, specifically on K and N Frames. I'm thinking of getting the checkered grips with finger grooves for my 629 Mountain Gun, and would like some opinions on whether walnut or rosewood looks better on stainless. I just can't decide.

I ordered some Altamont grips last week and got an email letting me know that they were in stock so I just got them the other day. I went to the range yesterday and then cleaned her up today and put the new grips on. I think they look great but I am biased... they are on my revolver!
Can't comment on your choices of wood... I went Silver/Black and I think it looks nice on SS. Quality is very good, installation was easy.

That looks nice.. so what material is that exactly? I really wish Altamont's site would be more specific and have pictures of all their alternative grips.

It is listed on their website as... "Smith & Wesson K Square FingerGrooves Oversize Cut Checkered Silver Black". Unsure of actual wood material but I found them to have great customer service... I emailed them to make sure my order was correct and they got back to me the same day, I am sure they would answer any questions you may have if you wanted to contact them.

I have also been looking at these, are they as thick as stock grips? Hard to tell much from their website.

K&L frames have the same grip profile and are fully interchangeable.

The only problem with Altamont is that they offer so many options that it would take about 10,000 pictures to show every possible combination.
I have black/grey and super walnut on my stainless guns.

swDC those don't look half bad! Can I ask what you had on there before the Altmonts? Hogues by any chance? I've got the Hogues on mine and I love how they feel and fit my small hands. If the Altmonts are close in size to the Hogues I will put them on the top of my want list.
Gorenut, they use a laminated wood product for their super walnut, super rosewood, and the black/silver grips. laminated wood like this is usually made up of layers of Birch dyed in contrasting colors to give the appearance of grain. I'm not sure they even offer any grips made from a solid wood, like walnut or rosewood.

Thanks... I like them a lot. My wife was laughing at me for busting out the camera and doing a photoshoot after I put them on. I had the stock rubber hogues on the revolver before putting these on. These grips feel similar... although not the same, slightly larger by the S&W medallions perhaps. But these are listed as the "oversize cut". I previously tried a pair of hogue wood grips and I found those to be nearly identical to the rubber grips in size if that is what you are looking for. I picked them up at a pawn shop but ultimately did not like the color so I brought them back.

An online vendor- gun grip supply .com sells Alatmont grips and has photos of the grips in many materials on their site. They have been very fast with their shipping too.

Here's a pair on my 657. Pic is terrible and don't do them justice. Blow the expensive combats away in the comfort department and fit my hand like a glove. Like most of my grips (combats excluded) I lightly sanded them a bit to fit my hand. They also make for fast reloads. I really like their modern day looks on a 25 YO revolver and the price was right.

Gripseller on fleabay carries a good selection in stock and she will order any combination you want. S&W just placed a big order for grips and Altamont is several weeks to a month behind. I have six grips on order.

I just received these and have not 'fired' them yet. They are slimmer than the factory targets:

I got the Altamont grips for my 686 with the oversize finger grooves. It does not fit my hand and causes the revolver to ride a lot higher than I'd like. I ended up going with their target conversion (RB -> SB) later.
I like their rosewood on the stainless guns. I matched mine up with the oxblood Sourdough Pancake from Simply Rugged Holsters. Looks pretty good together.

I wouldn't order another pair of Altamont grips for pay. The only ones I've received from them had flats on all surfaces touching the frame, were thinned just below the emblems, Very disappointed in them. Are these grips even made in America?

Altamont grips are OK. I have several pair. I believe they make the laminate grips for S&W. I had ordered several sets while replacing all the wood on my revolvers lately. I should have known by the name and price (super rosewood) it was a laminate not total wood. Like I said nothing wrong with it if that's what you want. I was just looking for real wood. I am much happier with the Hogue Cocobolo and Eagle Rosewood. Here are a set of the Altamont. They are a great company to deal with.
JR
Set of Hogue Cocobolo. Also have a brownish set.

I don't know how to break it to you but Altamonts (diamond wood)is real wood and in some respects being a re manufactured laminate gives them more structural integrity than what I think you were alluding to when you stated real wood instead of SOLID WOOD. I also prefer solid wood Ahrends and the Hogue monogrip grips but primarily due to the way they fit and feel in my hand. The positive aspects to consider about the Altamonts is they will never split or check as a solid wood might and are also superior in stability. I like using Altamonts less and less since becoming a Ahrends convert but there are still a upside in my opinion to using there magnas when you aren't trying to remain period correct and would rather not pay the price of original Smiths that are being sold on ebay for ridiculous prices. The one aspect when comparing the Ahrends to the Altamonts that is obvious is the Altamonts look factory produced, as they are. Your Hogue cocobolo grips are exceptional.
1. Altamont Rosewood
2.Hogue Monogrip Cocobolo
3. Ahrends Bubinga

Solid Verses Laminate

I couldn't agree more with a difference of opinion but there is nothing inferior about laminate. It is just a common misconception. Some of your finest furniture from as early as the 17Th century was constructed using fine veneer on the tops and fronts that allowed fancy bookmarking and matching. My first choice is also solid as I noted, due to the size of the typical pair of stocks stability isn't typically an issue. I did have a pair of Ahrends that I thought I was going to have to send back due to a little twist in one side, what kim Ahrend states about as all his grips being double checked for fit is no joke, if there is a small irregularity in them it makes it impossible to fit due to the tight tolerance. I finally persevered and once I got them on could see the smallest twist but in spite of that they still fit like a glove.
No disrespect intended to your opinion or choice as mine is the same.

I never said it was inferior. I just prefer the feel of natural wood. Don't get all bent out of shape. I had nothing negative to say about them. I have bought 3 sets of S&W Target grips for around 60.00 as new as they came off the guns on Facebook groups in the past couple of months. I have my 19 I used in LE for 10 years, put 50K through it and taught LE firearms with it. Has no cracks or chips in it. Only got dark from years of perspiration. If you like laminate go for it. I just prefer wood in its natural state,

Altamont finger groove conversion grips work well for me on my 625JM. 1st set that my hand feels right on! Most of my Smiths wear target grips. Bob

I have yet to find finger groove grips that fit me.
I believe Jerry Miculek says they fit somewhere between 10% and 20% of most folks.
The most comfortable off the shelf handles for my L frame 44's so far is the Altamont round-square conversion AH.
The shape is similar to the Miculek's but with squarer edges.
I like the look of them too.
The laminate is good for carry and all around everyday use.
