New 3" J or K model?
Just saw this over at Bud's;
Smith & Wesson 5 Round 38 Special Classic w/3" Barrel/Wood G $633.00 SHIPS FREE
It is a 3", 5 shot, .38 spcl only that weighs 25 oz, and does not have a shrouded ejector rod, nor AS. Looks like a 3" K frame but only has 5 shots and weighs like a J frame.
Is this new? I could not find any info on S&W's website. Does anybody have the scoop?

Looks like the Classic line model 36, just with a 3" barrel.
Also it's way too pricey IMO. You could almost get two old J frames for that price.

Now that my revolver has been properly insulted ...
That is the 3" Chief's Special Classic Model 36 offered a few years ago. I carry mine often.
A fine gun for some of us, and considering what it is not too bad a price either.

They may call it a "Classic", but this is the real Classic!
Some say I overpaid on a 95% gun with no box or papers for $450...........I think I got a sweet deal!

To the OP, in case you have not caught on the S&W "Classics" are lines of guns that have been discontinued and are being reissued as a tribute to their fore-bearer (much like the new Cameros, Challengers and Mustangs). While some of us think this is a pretty cool thing for S&W to do, others feel it is an abomination to make any of the old 50's style guns any other way than in the original mold with the original parts and the original price.

I think the Classic guns are mostly very nice, with beautiful stocks and finishes. But when I see a facsimile of a classic model with that hideous internal lock, priced through the roof, it makes me disappointed in S&W's current revolver line.

I'm with you. I like the 3" revolvers and there's not that many made. So, if you can't find an existing one - then you don't have much choice but to buy a new one.
I've never owned, nor even shot, a model 36 before. So I'm not sure if I'd like it. I'm curious; is the model 36 a K frame? If it is, then I might already have something very close with the square butt - this 3" I got from Bud's last week.
Edit: or maybe I should ask; what's the difference between a model 10-4 with a 3" barrel and a model 36 with a 3" barrel? I know the 36 is RB and mine is SB. But is the frame bigger on the m10? Also, my 10-4 was dated to 1966-67.

the model 36 is a J frame, 5 shot.
While the model 10 is a K frame 6 shot. Thus larger and heavier.

36 is a J frame, which is smaller. You own a K frame.

I just found four 3" 36s online in about ten seconds. I could buy any one of these, light two $100 bills on fire, and still come out ahead compared to the Classic line 36.

I really like the M36 with the 3" heavy barrel as well. I just put one on layaway at a local gun shop. It has the pinned barrel, but not the recessed cylinder, and a square butt grip frame. Overall, the gun is a solid 97% with only a slight amount of bluing loss around the muzzle. Hey, you can't blame the original owner for wanting to carry such a great little gun. I paid $429 for it, which was the asking price. Since it was a layaway, and the price seemed fair, I did not feel the need to haggle. I already have a pair of S&W combats waiting for her when she gets home. I can't wait. It will be my new hiking, camping, tree stand hanging gun.
As for the Classic line, it is a great idea and very nice guns, but I just cannot get past the lock. Why S&W, oh why?

M3STUART,
I recently acquired a blued M36 RB with 3" Heavy Barrel, for
about what papajohn paid for his. I really like it, and have put a grip adapter on it, thanks to "wrangler5". It is a joy to shoot, and the Round Butt grip is sweet, too. Got mine from G-B auction site. It's in
good enough shape, that it'll outlive me. TACC1

Thanks. I was just looking at GB and other sites. Apparently they are out there!
I guess the model 60 'advantage' is that it also handles .357 ( )...
Does the 36 carry, say in a pocket holster, comparable to a 60?

A 36 will carry the same or better than a 60. Go to one of the lightweight models and then you are getting into comfortable pocket territory. 3" barrels on these guns are nice to look at and shoot at the range, but I wouldn't carry one. I have this 37 that just sits in the safe. Throwing it in a little holster on the hip is an idea I haven't explored yet, might work well.

I carry mine often in a custom Keeton holster.
I think you would be happier with the OLD SCHOOL.

ORIGINAL PRICE ? ? ? Fat chance of that happening, as much as I would like to pay 17 cents for a gallon of gas I don't ever expect to see that happen again. However, I will agree that the asking price of many of the Classics is a bit dear, however the model 14 that one local dealer is asking over 900 bucks for has the prettiest blueing on a revolver I've seen since Colt stopped offering the Python in Royal Blue.

Personally I wouldn't own one of the "Classics". Not only because of the lock but they have somehow either recontoured the frame to hide more of the hammer or reduced the size of the hammer so it goes into the frame more???? Either way it just doesn't blow my dress up AT ALL!!! Give me the old school guns anyday....
