I bought this new in '75, (Model 60,.38 SPL. 2"), and always used the original grips with the grip adapter for 17 years carrying it as a backup. It was very easy to conceal. I'm in FL and carry it in my back shorts pocket.

What is this?
It is not often I am so stumped.

factory wood round butt grips with the tyler t-grip has worked for me for 35 years on my j-frames.

Looks just like my no-dash, my favorite carry piece !

I have tried many. e.g., Spegel, Ahrends, etc., for a J Frame and IMO the best are Esmeralda's. They are not only beautiful, but mine have a palm swell that greatly reduces recoil in +p loads.

Anybody have a source for J frame round butt stag stocks?
How about vintage elephant/mammoth ivory?
I tried a search but my google-fu was weak.

Good subject...I love J Frames and I love grips! All of these are Altamont's.

I had a set of Hogue boot grips. They really got hung up on my shirt with my inside the pant holster. I went looking for a smooth wood stock. These are my first Altamonts. I really like the silver/black they offer.






Goes with me everywhere.

I can't say I like it or that I hate it, but I grant you one thing: that sure is different and you can't keep from looking at it.

I ordered these from Smith & Wesson for my model 60. Large enough for comfortable hold, covered back-strap, fairly smooth for rubber, and don't have to worry about them getting scuffed up.

It a skull. The gunsmith shop that I work with use a skull in their logo. It's a duracoat finish.

For CCW guns, its boot grips for me.
I order Ahrends Cocobolo finger grove grips for my J frame. I order them unfinished. That way I can work on them with some 80 grip to get a fine, personal fit. Then, after working down to 220 grit, I apply several coats of Tung oil. I don't see the logic of big grips on a small concealable revolver. If I use larger grips, I can also use a larger gun (K frame snub). I have a similar philosophy about barrel length. 2 inches for a J frame and 2.5 or 3 inches for a K or L frame, for CCW.

Hello all:

I am new to the J Frame club. I was wondering if the clip stocks make any difference in the shooting of the little J Frames as far as recoil of muzzle flip is concerned?

Please take into account with your feedback that I am shooting a Model 360pd 357 weighing only 12 oz. But will probably not shoot anything over the +P very often.

The rubber factory grips are really nice and the recoil is to be expected for such a light gun. What I don't want is to spend $ on a new set of stocks just to be disappointed. My guess is that the hard plastic grips will cause it to be a bit more severe?!

Please advise when possible and I appreciate the feedback.

I had these and liked them a lot, but they didn't hold up to 357 magnums.


I also had these walnut Badgers on my M&P 340 for a little while. Outstanding fit, beautiful finish, loved em. Afraid to scratch them during EDC, so they came back off.


And now I have these Ahrends cocobolo grips, and I think I like these best. I'll probably watch for another set to come available for my 43C.

Update - Took off the Hogue Bantam grip. Replaced it with used factory Magnas (non-matching numbers) and a BKGrip adapter.

I second that... the slim little Dymondwood grips are perfect for me... in a pocket or on the belt I know I can get my whole hand around them no matter what. I also find that they let me get a higher grip on my Centennials, which helps me with accuracy and follow-up shots. Plus they look cool, imo...

Eagle Secret Service, magnas ant tgrip, and factory bananas are predominantly what I use. Currently have a no dash nickel 442 with bananas in a Kramer pocket holster.

My favorite also, close 2nd is current S&W full J rubber grip that closely duplicates the MIKES

I have the Hogue Tamer on One 442 for long range sessions. I kept the stock grips on my other 442 and bobbed 37 for carry.

Two Handguns every day

These are factory J frame combats. I haven't been able to find much info on them, other than they are expensive if you can find them.

Like Taroman, I've tried all the pretty grips out there, but found that for concealability and shootability, you just can't beat the stock service grips with the T-grip adapter. Here's my very well worn M38 and my not-so-worn M66...

Here's my scandium j frame. The finish got so bad on it I had it coated Marine Corp red. The Ergo grips are terrific and very comfortable even if they look weird. I can make hits with it and that's what counts. It lives in the leather pocket holster which is why the finish wore so badly.

I have a model 36 round butt that came w/ wood grips but they were uncomfortable when shooting so we replaced them with Hogue rubber grips much like some of the pictures but they were designed in the three finger style instead of two finger as many that were shown. They are very comfortable and are not so big as to interfere w/ concealed carry. My wife and I love them.

Another vote for the Taurus boot grips......as pictured by chp, in post #90. Nylon instead of rubber, so not sticky or overly squishy. Well made - even have alignment pins molded in (to keep the two halves aligned with each other). Cheap - $9.00 on the Taurus website. Absorb recoil very well. The shape is nearly perfect for my hand.

Since I stay with synthetic grips on J-frame sized revolvers (for carry and recoil reasons).....these are the ticket (for me). Best I've ever found.

I recently picked up this older Model 36 with factory banana grips; I was surprised as to how good they feel and how well the revolver points with them. Probably not the best if you are trying to conceal it though.

The alloy grips from EFF are some of the lightest and thinnest.

I really like the grips that come on the 642 Performance Center Talo Edition. I found that they sell this grip at Altamontco Grips. They are the best feeling, hand fitting grips I have on any of my J Frames. Altamont Company

640Pro 340PD Shield M&P 22

This is not a collection; it is an accumulation

My 442 currently wears ERGO Delta grips. They look strange and it takes a few seconds to accustom oneself to the feel. 5 yard accuracy is as before -- never great with a 10 lb. trigger pull, but adequate. And these grips do eliminate the trigger guard smack on the middle finger's second knuckle, a big problem for me. After 50 rounds or so the webbing of the hand does get a little sore from the hard backside of the grip. It is still a work in progress.....

I can't stand any of the stock grips on a j frame. I feel like I have to bend my right thumb so far down to keep it out of the way of pulling the trigger, that it doesn't work. Or you stick it forward underneath the cylinder and that makes me nervous.

I bought the Hogue Tamer grips and they feel like they were made for my hand and make the gun feel like a different gun. I IWB strong side and never carry in a pocket, so the size isn't an issue. I know they help with felt recoil too.
