I had a custom made holster from Keeton Custom Holster for my 3 in, J frame and love it. I think it was only 50.00 or so shipped forgot to say mine is for the belt.

I have yet to be satisfied with any "off the shelf" belt holster. For revolvers, I go with Tucker Gunleather.
I have not seen any "off the shelf" pocket holsters for 3" J-Frames. I carry my 2 inch 640-1 in a Desantis Nemesis.

S&W Online Store used to sell them for both 3 in and 5 in M60s, made my Desantis, IIRC. I have one for 5 in M60 and have been very satisfied -- it is belt holster.

Bianchi M6 for IWB carry of my 3" Kit Guns. In the past, I have occasionally removed the clip from an M6 for use as a pocket holster, but these guns fit rather tight in this particular M6, so I don't see that working in this case.

Don Hume makes some great holsters, and very reasonable.

Search eBay using the term 3" Chief holster. There are some fairly decent holsters being made in Thailand, available in nylon or leather, for a very inexpensive price. Not like a first-rate custom-made USA holster, but not bad for the price. For some reason, they don't title them as J-frame, but for the 3" Chief revolver.

I've had good luck finding decent holsters on eBay, too. Just this week I found this one, S&W marked, for my 36-1. It's got a few scuffs and dings but so does the gun. For $25, I figured it was worth it.
There are some deals out there, you just have to look.

From slightly different perspective:
I modified a 2" J-frame holster to fit a 3" by removing a few stitches and allowing the muzzle to protrude below the leather. I tied off the remaining stitches (as best I could) and made sure nothing would unravel by adding a spot of Duco cement (remember that?).
I also saved a leather preformed holster when it "relaxed" (stretched) too much after some use. A strategically-placed sex bolt (slightly in front of the trigger guard's position), held the front & rear holster halves together and prevented the revolver from sinking.

Ha.. unexpected comment -- made me LOL.
I did think someone would ask what that was though...
You'd expect to find them more in Office Depot than Home Depot, as they're used for certain types of binders. Difficult to find in very short lengths (1/4 to 3/8). The very flat heads on the male and female components make for a smooth surface on the outside of the holster.
I believe McMaster-Carr has them, for those who might actually need one.

Nice J-frame holsters for 3-inch models require a bit of searching.
Here are pictures of two found on eBay - a Bianchi #3 IWB and a Desantis Speed Scabbard (custom shop special order that is stamped XO2 03). Both are nicely-made holsters that work quite well and were offered at very fair prices.
The third is a Milt Sparks Versa Max II horsehide/sharkskin holster. The Milt Sparks is perhaps the best crafted and most comfortable holster I've ever experienced. The downside is that, ordering took 6 months and once it arrived, I was speechless. The Milt Sparks is a beautiful piece of art and I'm afraid to use it.

S&W Accessories offers several versions of the DeSantis holster for 3" J-frames @ ~$65 + s/h. Here is mine from last winter - with my new 3" 60 Pro holstered - and my 3" 63, which also fits it perfectly, alongside:
Fit is secure - and they also have them less the thumb latch.
