Welcome to the forum.
AJJ should come from somewhere between Jan. 1986 and July 1987. The book does not get more specific than that.
What model gun is it?

Model 686 6"
The guy that has it was stating 1984 to 1985 range.
What about an AUU0633...I was also told this would be in the 1984 to 1985 range by a different feller.
Same Model.

I can tell you my first duty sidearm was a 4" 686 #AEJxxxx issued to me on March 1st, 1985 and it was new at that time (I'm guessing manufactured in 1984).
A fantastic revolver I will say and a tack-driver. To this day I swear by the 686 and have a 3" that gets LOTS of CCW holster time. It's S&W's "Goldilocks" .357 IMHO

Post 5,
The SCSW doesn't specifically show info on an HXW prefix.
HXW is likely a S&W semiauto pistol.
This thread and sub-forum is for 1980 or newer S&W revolvers.
If your HXW s/n'd pistol is an M&P model, there's a specific sub-forum for those here:

S&W 686-4 6 inch 6 shot square butt
I’m trying to pin point the date of my 686-4
It’s a 6 inch gun 6 shot square butt hammer mounted firing pin pre Hillary hole obviously. I was told it’s a mid 90s SERIAL prefix is BPZ****.. was also told it could be a transitional gun any info is much appreciated thanks in advance

I will guess that BPZ-xxxx is late 1993 or possibly early 1994. You can send an e-mail to S&W and they will give you a closer date.
Those stocks are not correct. It’s possible they are altered but my guess is that they are some kind of import copy. Great revolver, a lot of folks believe that the dash-4 was the pinnacle of the 686.

686-4
Yes I know they are not original they are an imported grip but very well made and the price is very desirable just been waiting to find a good set on ebay when I got it used from an acquaintance he had the rubber hogue grips on it and I found these grips for a decent price on Amazon I figured it was a 1994.. I have a 686-6 in 4 inch and it don’t compare to this one iv taken it apart and polished up every component and. Ow it is a nice silky smooth DA/SA trigger I paid 800$ for it and what sold me was I seen it was an older one with the hammer mounted firing pin and I knew right away it was a nice one.. it shoots like a dream. I can ring a 12 inch gong at 65 yards shooting in Single action it performs really well with a 135 gr RN bullet.. I carry it e wry now and then worn 125GR American gunner XTP rounds that also seem to perform well.. but hey thanks for the input!
