Like my 44 mags, but I prefer the longer barrels-what William Layton said.

My first revolver purchase was a 44 magnum. Its my favorite round to shoot. Very entertaining and very versatile. I have shot a lot of it up to 240 grain. I recently purchased a Ruger for really hot (over 240 grain) 44 magnum rounds. Its kind of addicting. You can still find deals on 44 mag ammo if you look hard enough and you can always get into reloading.

I don’t know what’s weirder : the answer 7 years after the last post (#44), or all the answers AFTER you pointed that out (and it’s easy to overlook after the first necropost).

Interesting posts from an old thread.I do notice in the new posts that a Model 69,in either bbl. length is not discussed. With 44 Spl.,I think this would be a good choice.(?)I have not fired one(69),but it looks like an interesting revolver.

My reason for not going to 44 would be ammo cost. While 44 mag would be more powerful, 357 does everything that I need for less.

Get one of these, S&W Performance Center Hunter. You won't be able to wipe that smile off your face.

A M29 Mountain Gun was my second handgun. I have only fired a full box of ammo at the range once. I don't find it necessary. I usually shoot a box of 44 special's, usually at a plate rack and then a few of what ever I have magnums and then a cylinder or two of Buffalo Bore low recoil's.
Now that I have other pistols I do most of my practice with cheaper to shoot ammo and it would be expensive to pop off 150 rounds in 30 minutes like I now do with 9mm or 38 but once you can more or less shoot to what ever standard you want you can maintain it with a monthly range trip. Shooting it 50 rounds twice a week is way out of my budget.

I reload 44 mag more than any other caliber. I have 10 revolvers and 2 rifles in that chambering. Lets just say it makes me shoot 357 mag like a 22LR

I usually ignore the zombie threads but can't help it today. My first and second revolvers were 44 spl, a Charter Arms & a Rossi. The 44 caliber stuck. (The first 2 guns didn't stick) I went on an S&W 44 mag hunt and ended up here....

Wow that’s an impressive lineup.
Since we’re answering a ghost, my first gun was a S&W 422 which I didn’t like and got rid of quickly. My second gun was a 1988 Desert Eagle in .44 Magnum. I had no problem adapting to the larger caliber.

I started off with a used model 10 .38 Special and after one range trip traded it off for a Colt Python. I was ready for an Anaconda very shortly thereafter. 44mags are not hard to shoot well at all. My 480 Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley OTOH.....?

Really?!
In my Bisley blackhawk, full potato 480's with 410g home cast is comparable to the 44mag IMO. A bit more, but not off-putting.
Now, when I shoot the same round in my Super Redhawk, not as much fun...

I handload 6 or 7 calibers, so ammo cost is not a big factor. That being said, I prefer 45Colt, or 45ACP, to a 44 magnum. I have 2 (29's) right now, and plan on trading 1 off. My 25-15 is a pleasure to shoot & accurate. 625 JM is fun to shoot.
The decision is all yours!
I would love to pick up a 25-7! (who wouldn't right?) Bob

I own a 4”, 6 1/2” and 8 3/8” Model 29. The 4” is more difficult to master.
Shorter sight radius, increased muzzle blast and lighter weight all contribute I guess. Not impossible, just requires more shooting AND more ammo so the sooner you can get into reloading the better.

Full throttle 44 mag loads out of my 9.5” SRH are down right comfy to shoot. 44 specials through that are laughably non recoiling. I can shoot 480s just fine through my SBH Bisley but I’ve been shooting 30 yrs. would not recommend as a first gun because it’s more of a specialized round tailored to expensive reloading almost exclusively. Brass is $53 per 100 and unless you cast (I do not) bullets cost about twice what 44 mag bullets run and most likely you would have to special order them.
