New Guy and New Gun
I am new on this forum and have been reviewing the inputs. Purchased a S&W 65-3, serial # AWY7947. Can anyone give me the year produced. Thanks, Bobchap.

According to SCSW, 65-5 models were made between 1988 and 1997. AWYXXXX looks to be from sometime between July and December 1987, but some of the three letter prefixes are out of order in that 1987 to 1988 timeframe. I'd guess you have an early -5 from late 1987 or early 1988.

My 65-3 was made in 1987 (give or take a few months) and it's serial number was ANRXXXX. There is no way to be precise short of calling S&W. The frames apparently were stamped with serial numbers but the workers who fitted and finished out the guns would grab the frames to work on in no particular order. The factory however kept track of when any particular serial number left the factory.
