Default New 617 shooting high

Took my brand new 617 to the range today to put it through the paces. I was shooting from 7 to 10 yards to try and get it dialed in. Gun was shooting high, I adjusted the sight to the point where I have no adjustment left and the gun is still shooting a couple inches high.

I'm going to clean the gun good and go back and try it again and see what happens. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the black front sight, it's not the easiest thing for me to see. Any ideas, it could just be me, if I still have the same problem I will have someone else shoot it and see how it does for them.

Try using a six o'clock hold on the target and put some red nail polish on the front sight blade. Also try 15 and 25 yards to see how it does at those ranges.

Everything may be explained by your inability to see the front sight clearly. I had that problem, and it caused me to shoot high. My problem resulted from the fact that I could barely see my front sight with my prescription glasses. The blurry image caused me to tip the barrel upward so that the top of the front sight projected above the plane made by the left and right sides of the rear sight. I decided to discard my prescription glasses for plain shooting glasses and, instantly, my tendency to shoot high vanished.

Another possibility. Check the forward screw on your rear sight. Is it loose? A loose foward screw will cause the rear sight to tilt rearwards and that will result in your shooting high. Tightening the front screw often works wonders.

I had the very same problem with my 4" no dash. Shot about 8" high at 15 yards. I had a ramp sight from a previous M617 that I took off when I sold it. Got it from S&W and had a local gunsmith drill it out and attach it. This sight was considerably taller than the patridge that came on the gun. After installation on my 4", I sighted it in at 25 yards and now it works perfectly. All shots stayed in the black. I like the Baughman Ramp anyway. Notice the ramp sight on the top gun. Big Larry
