Good day! I am new to write to this forum. Been reading for years.
I just purchased a S&W .44 Mag. Mountain gun Model 29-8.
I'm hoping you all can help me learn the manufacturing date of my first N-Frame.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Very cool. I love 44 mags. Very nice gun. Welcome to forum. I'm not sure about the date. Someone will though. Lots of knowledgable folks here.

Very cool. Post the Spec. Ord. number and we can tell you the exact day it shipped. Otherwise, I'd say.......

October of 2006.

I have a later brother to yours, in the DAK2xxx serial range.

The product code is 663604

There is also on the box: *****M29 44MAG 4" CS BL M

My fired case is from 10/17/06, if that helps place your gun a bit better.

These were a dealer special IIRC, possibly TALO; perhaps someone more learned could step in here, if that's not correct.

The laser-etched wood grips are a very nice texture and fit, and I quite like the discreet 'Mountain' branding on them. They did, however, make my hand bleed a bit after a single cylinder of fairly warm magnum loads. They now wear my favorite rubber grips: the X-Frame Hogues. Much more comfortable to shoot everything now.

FWIW, I thought about getting rid of mine after acquiring a new M69, since that fits the role of a hiking gun a bit better for me. I couldn't do it, as this M29-8 has the ->best<- DA trigger of any gun I own, period.

It's almost startling how smooth the pull and perfect the break are. My buddy said he wished his Python was so smooth. Thanks to the member here who turned me on to my first N-frame.

Does your Product Code start with a "6", or did you mis-type?

My product code starts with a '6' as written. All others I've seen start with a 1.

My S&W bar code is the same number (0 22188 63604 8) as all others I've seen online, so I'm not sure what that's about.

Asked to be sure. S&W replaces the normal "1" with a "6" when the gun is used. Often the end label will include the words "USED GUN" were the features are normally listed.

Was your box so marked, and did you know it was used when you bought it?

Cool, thanks for the info ! I did buy the gun second-hand, and it was not represented as anything other than such.

There is a hand-scrawled number above the Features line (74391) that I just assumed was a stocking number.

It was probably just a "salesman's sample" and never saw much use. A little handling, if anything. I've seen some that were marked USED just because the original boxes were damaged in shipping, and they were sent back to the factory for new boxes.
