Default 686 all scratched up

Picked this one up in a multi gun trade about a week ago. Engraved by a gent named Davis. Anyone know anything about Mr. Davis?

Don't know anything about a Mr. Davis but that was either a commisioned piece or a personal "masterpiece", that degree of engraving is way way over the norm. I suspect you are looking at several years of work.

I could give you, maybe, $234 for it since it's so scratched up - for a "truck gun".
Beautiful.

I'd sure hate to clean the carbon fouling off after shooting it.

Seriously, it's a fine looking revolver, you should be proud to own it,

Hey guys appreciate all the kudos. Have taken some more pics. Hopefully, here they are. I sure hope I can find out something about Mr. Davis who did this work. Any help greatly appreciated. If you will notice, he even engraved the hammer and the trigger partially.

Regards

Bill

I need to adorn it with ivories or really nice stags. Anyone got a nice set they want to part with? If I put targets or anything larger than magnas it covers up the engraving.

Roc Doc, "Thanks" for the article. Is Tuscumbia (sp) in Alabama? That is a great article about Herschel Davis. I am assuming he is the same "Davis". Appreciate your posting that, more than you know. Are you from that area? Do you know this guy? What a great find you provided me with.

I'd go with the Hieser and for grips I'd go real ivory that has some carving in them as well.

Very nice thanks for sharing.

Glad to help out. Not from Alabama. I googled "davis and engraver". Several hits came up and this one looked spot on.

IDP, It has been shot, in fact had a lot of carbon on cylinder face when I got it. However, it has the worst double action trigger pull I believe I have ever seen on any S & W. Single action is very smooth. I don't want to remove the side plate for fear of mismatching the scratching on that side. Maybe it will loosen up after I load some up to rattle its teeth.

Thanks again to all for the help in finding the info about the engraver.

regards

Bill

Do alot of dry firing with her, an that along with regular shooting should help smooth out the DA trigger pull.

Boys, I have found Mr. Davis. He is semi retired and not doing much engraving any longer, only as a hobby. I appreciate all of your help and the info that you provided to take me to completion in this search.
