Here's my 24-3. Grips are somewhat flaky in this picture - have since put some Ahrends on it but don't have a picture of that.

You did the right thing!

I've been shooting 29's and 629's since the early 80's and just recently I found the purpose built 44Spl and if I may say, they are inherently accurate and pleasing to shoot.

Love the blue ones, especially with ivory.

Bill,
Beautiful. A real honest to goodness Model 24. So it's a 4 screw; no dash or -1 ?

Another one of those pesky 24-3 LH's wearing a Stelzigs Saddlery holster from 40 plus years ago. Not exactly period correct but "what the hay?"

24-3 and 624. The 24-3 belonged to a serious target shooter, action is great but finish was rough. George Roghaar in Florida refinished it for me. Wonderful man to deal with.

Nice guns and pictures, you guys. One of my old friends, who happens to be a 44 Special fanatic, has the only nickel 1950 Target I have ever seen. I keep mentioning to him that it should be cleaned up and photographed, but I don't think it is going to happen.

Great looking stocks on your guns, KSCowboy.

Well, I guess there really are 2 of them. Another resides in my safe. I bought it from Ray Brazille maybe 10 or so years ago. He said it was the only one he'd ever seen. He sees a lot of guns, so him saying it was pretty interesting to me. But it didn't really matter much, it was a great gun at a great price.

Call the guy and ask him what the approximate serial # is. Mine is in the S103,000s. It would be interesting to see if his is a stablemate.

RBurg, I think Bob's number may be higher, I was thinking in the S140xxx-S150xxx range, but can't say right now. I think I have it in my S&W notebook at home. Will get back to you.

This 1952 (S 85,500) non model marked 5 screw probably began life as a 45 caliber gun.
Fifteen years later (10/67) owner decided he wanted a 6.5"inch .44 special more and sent it back for a conversion.
The trigger pull is truly amazing but I dream of either swapping into a 4"inch barrel or chopping it down to 5"inch.

Stumbled into this 3"inch Model 24-3 as well as its twin in .44 Mag a few years back but could find no practical use for them at the time ,

Kinda regret selling them now but we do what we do.
3"inch 24-3 (right) with its twin 3"inch Model 29-3 (left).

I really think the .44 Special needs at least a four-inch barrel. Why the enthusiasm for those snubs?

Has anyone here clocked the velocity from a short barrel and normal .44 Special factory ammo? It 's moderate, even from longer barrels.

("Has anyone here clocked the velocity from a short barrel and normal .44 Special factory ammo? It 's moderate, even from longer barrels.")

The question should be, is the velocity of a .44 Special a 'terminal' velocity out of a 3" barrel at 10 yards or less, as that is what they were designed for? The answer is yes.

For some, in addition to the 1" shorter barrel, it's the round butt for concealability.

I prefer the 4".

I found this one at a show in SouCal a few years ago at a very reasonable price. I had been looking for one for years and did not hesitate.

My 24-3 picked up at show a couple months ago, came with Pachmayers, put these Eagles on bought at same show. Now wears Ahrends stained maple retro targets.

I had 2 model 24-3s. I traded the one that had been lightly used and kept the NIB. I’m reversing policy on such matters. NIB safe queens going to walk the plank and keeping shooters.

I will say that I prefer the look of the 4" M24 but like the 5" on the older hand ejectors.

Wow, talk about a necro-thread - but that's OK, I'll play...

Adios,

Here is mine, tuned by Andy Cannon, stock by Guy Hogue from when you called Guy and he made them personally (I still have the correct one), and a Millett sight. I've got the original holster that Smith sold for it too.

All this was done way back when before I cared about collectability!
