smith&wesson grip company???
guys,
i pulled a set of grips off a gun today.they were beatifull dark rosewood finger groove combat grips.i thought they were eagle grips. they are round butt fingergroove.on the inside was stamped SMITH WESSON GRIP COMPANY.i called sw and the cs rep had heard that at one time smith wesson had a person making these grips at the sw factory, back in the 90's.these grips have no sw medallion, but were made by the sw company
she said these were usually for a special order gun,or a performance center gun.
any advice or help on the history of the smith wesson grip company would be appreciated

At some point likely in the late-'80s S&W got out of the grip-making business and farmed the work out to a number of smaller outfits. As you've found out, the "Smith and Wesson Grip Company" was one of them. Ace is another name you'll find on some factory grips, made for only a short time (S&WGC may have become Ace and then folded, I don't know). Eventually, they settled on Altamont, who continues to make them today.

Altamont Company does all their wooden grips now. Never heard of a Smith and Wesson Grip Co.

Resurrecting an old post here (new member). I just got a 29-3 and pulled a set of S&W Grip Co. stocks off of it. There's a phone # of 800-831-0852, Ext. 2904. Sooo, is that an old # for S&W? Doesn't come up on Google for me. The serial # of the gun is BAR4219 (matching on butt bottom and inside cylinder housing). So I'm guessing mid-80s. gun, yes? Grips are very cool, no medallion either side.

Your 29-2 would date to about 1988, can't give you any info on the stocks.

As already stated, Smith and Wesson Grip Company and ACE were the same outfit.

That would kick up my inquisitive side. I'd have already called it to see what it was. Did anyone answer

I sure would like to see some pictures of these SWGC handles! I've never knowingly seen a set.
