.45 GAP with Moon/Half Moon Clips
Oddly enough, the easiest centerfire handgun ammunition to locate these days was the rarest 8 months ago. I read of a guy who successfully fired some 2000 rounds of .45 GAP ammunition in his Glock 21 (.45 ACP) pistol. The pressure on Std. .45 ACP is a nominal 21,000 CUP. It's 23,000 (equivalent to the .45 ACP +P) on the .45 GAP round. Has anyone fired .45 GAP ammo loaded in moon clips through a S&W Model 22, 25 or 625? Is there any safety reason not to.

Yes; a few years ago I decided to use 45 GAP ammo in full moonclips. I fired them in an S&W Model 22-4 in IDPA matches. Only problem I experienced with factory ammo was the rounds were very loose and wobbly in regular 45 ACP moonclips. I solved that problem by buying Starline 45 GAP brass. The recoil was not a problem compared to 45ACP.
The real problem with 45 GAP is difficulty finding ammo.

Yes, .45 GAP is fine in modern S&W revolvers. Also a few years ago one of the members here gave us a heads up that J&G had .45HP for sale at a good price and I bought several thousand rnds of it. It has a case length 1mm shorter than .45acp. That also works well with moon clips, if you happen on some............

Right before all this craziness started and I was still working at a police supply store the local college traded in their 45 gap Glock 37’s on Glock 21s. We also took all their ammo which consisted of Speer Lawman and Speer Gold Dot. It was a Struggle to sell the guns at the time and even tougher for the ammo. We had about five cases left,I bought two of the Lawman and one Gold Dot for a price I’m embarrassed to tell. I fired about 2 1/2 cases out of a 625 a Model 22 And two 25-2’s. Accuracy was good in all four guns and I was really surprised how snappy 45 GAP is. Kind of surprised about the guy who fired GAP ammo in a Glock 21 Not really sure how that would work. Like all of us if we only knew then what we know now.

A few months ago there was a time when .45ACP was rare and expensive, but .45GAP was plentiful and half the price, so I stocked up. Works great in my S&W revolver with moon clips.
Unfortunately, a lot of other people have caught on, and now GAP is more scarce and expensive than ACP.
The GAP duplicates the ballistics of the ACP, in a case just a little shorter. Designed to work in a Glock model that cannot handle the ACP case.

I was able to chronograph the Speer Gold Dot 200 grain .45 GAP round from a 4" S&W 22-4. Got an average of 961 fps from a total of 12 rounds. It had a high of 996 f.p.s. and a low velocity of 929 fps. I also ran 13 rounds through my Glock 21 SF. It averaged 879 fps with a high of 900 fps and a low of 862 fps. I had no malfunctions; most of the brass fell right at my feet. Speer's factory specified velocity from a 4" barrel is 970 fps.

Just bought 500 rounds of 45gap from GT Distributors. FHP trade-ins. $154.00, including shipping. Seems to be in good condition. I plan on shooting it in my 625-2, not sure about the 1950 or 1955. Definitely not in my 1917's. This will help stretch my supply of 45acp for use in other guns. Keep in mind if you want to do this, you must use moonclips. The 45gap case is too short to headspace in the cylinder.

Since they headspace on the case mouth I'd expect they drop in too deep. Unless there's such a thing as a single round moon clip.
