Visited a gun store in my old home town on Wednesday. They had a like new 27-2, no box for $975. I'm glad I bought one a few years ago for about half that! I guess I should have bought it for a retirement investment. I a couple of years they might be selling for $2000!

Yup, N-frames aren't to be found on the cheap. I had a price in mind and said I wouldn't go over. After three years I finally gave up and had to open that wallet up and pay $200 more than I wanted to. But I'm very glad I did.

I don't see that many new or used n frames latey. They seem to sell quickly. The chances of finding a used one is worse than finding a new one. I don't see that many older S&W, colts or even older rugers in 357mag in security six's too.

People (myself included) thought I was crazy to spend $800 for a like-new 5" 629-3 Classic DX last spring. If I was so inclined, I could probably make a couple of bucks on it already, as I've since seen two 5" DXs sell on GunBroker for more than that and several 6.5" DXs do almost what I paid for my 5".
I'm currently watching a few older 629s and you don't get a really nice one with attractive checkered targets for much less than $700.

I became interested in N frames two years ago and bought a few with the idea of collecting a couple of models. After taking a break to finish some projects, I recently started looking for others to add to my small collection. Prices seem to be higher now than what I paid a few years ago.

My dealer still has the brand new model 58's and model 57's in 41mag in blue and nickel finish for $699. I have the m58 w/4'' barrel in nickel and the m57 w/ 6 1/2'' barrel in nickel already. I been eyeing the m57 w/ 4 '' barrel in nickel next for $699 thats hard to pass up. I been pondering another 6 1/2'' barrel m57 in nickel and maybe run the rack again in all blued 41mags too. I can't lose at that cost. I think that S&W is the last big manufacturer to still offer the nickel finish.
The nickel finish on the S&W and colts has been the best. Since colt has discontinued doing nickel finishes i'm not sure how long S&W will be doing it. With ruger on the other hand discontinuing models over night I figure on playing it safe and grab what i can now if i want it. Guns here have been selling at an all time high. It looked like the christmas rush every weekend all summer. If you see it oneday and pass on it the next trip there its gone. I'm wondering if 2012 has everyone worried?
Around here most used guns aren't shot at all. I been buying brand new still unshot guns in the used gun case. Now if i can find any n frames there is the question. In one whole year++ i never seen one n frame in the used case.
With all the gun manufacturers offering the same model but with small changes actually doesn't change the slice of bread i think it makes most hang on to there older models. This is why we don't see that many used revolvers. Bill
"Changes" "production changes" vs. "customers wants/demands"
S&W; Has stopped manufacturing there 8 3/8'' barrels on there N Frame Revolvers. I don't mind the loc on the new S&W's if it saves one kids life its done its job. Anyway if the loc is ever discontinued the prices on revolvers with the loc will skyrocket because everyone will want them. My '05 SA 1911 GI Mil-Spec has the key start from brazil. With no small kids i never use it nor do i use the one on my S&W's too.
My point is with all the used auto pistols in the used gun case what are these guys buying right now. I see more open spaces in the S&W new revolver case everyday. I'm thinking there maybe a trend shifting towards revolvers now, maybe the auto pistols have come full circle and petered out a little in the demand.
Colt; Is offering nothing in the revolver department like they once did.
Ruger; Has me so confused with there discontinuing models over night i kind of gave up trying to buy rugers now. Trying to get a redhawk in 357 mag or in 41mag is what sent & drove me to get the S&W N Frames. If S&W still offers it i'm buying it. Thank God for S&W without them we'd have nothing in the bigger revolver line up.
Overall I guess I have to bite the bullet and pay for what ever i find that i want now. Its not having the choice anymore its whats available now.

You can find plenty of N frames at good prices, No your not going to find any sort of deals on NIB P&R specimens, but plenty of good solid shooters can be had.
I just traded a shooter grade Model 64 and $50 for a hunting grade Model 27. There are tons of "sporterized" 1917s and Brazilian's in the 2-400 range. Granted they were $100 guns just 15 years ago.

High cost now vs value down the road;
I wanted an SVT-40 russian tokarev sniper rifle. I found one at a 450 table gun show at the last table of course. At the time the cost was $650 when the average price was around $500. Now a few years later there hitting $1,000 to $1,200.
My point is the gun prices down go down like the cost of cars do. Our investment will increase in time and only increase. Bill
The only reason i'm seeing one or two used n frames is the ecomony is so bad. I haven't seen used n frames in many years till now.

Sounds like a bubble. How many collectors are in their late 60s and early 70s (or even older) right now?
