3" M38 Stainless?
I saw a photo of something odd today.
Supposedly a 3" M38 in stainless steel
I never even knew that there ever was a 3" M38 made - much less in stainless.
If it is really stainless would that mean it was actually some other model? 638 maybe?
Or maybe it isn't stainless - maybe it's some kind of hard chrome?
It's not pinned, and it doesn't have the IL.
The front sight looks to me like it came from a gun with adjustable sights.
Can anyone clear up this conundrum? What is this?

According to the catalog, there were 3" versions in Nickel.
That may be what it was.
If so, that's a somewhat rare gun.

It looks like hard chrome or electroless nickel. 3” Model 38’s didn’t have a front sight ramp base, so the barrel and front sight were likely added at some point.

Likely a model 60-4 barrel added onto a model 38 (or 49) frame.
Edit to add - uh, yes, those did have a full underlug...forgot about the 3' model 36 Targets...my bad.

Didn’t those have a full lug?

Yes, M-60-4 has a full lug barrel.
But I think I've seen limited production M-60 barrels like this for adj. sighted M-60's. My guess is that this may be a custom barreled M-649. Might or might not be from the factory.

Great catch.
That does look like the 3" barrel from a Model 36 Chief's Special Target was swapped onto the frame before the revolver was refinished in hard chrome

Definitely a 3" target barrel swap and looks like an aftermarket nickel plate job. My guess is, that gun is going to shoot a mile low with any standard load.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. I knew it didn't look right. Especially that ramped front sight on a fixed sight gun.
