Cheap 64's on Gun Broker
So I am saving my pennies for a new toy, and I came across the police trade-in model 64's that Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore is selling for a bit over $200. The pics show pre-lock, hammer-mounted firing pin guns...but the written description doesn't say what "dash" these guns are, and the pics could be unrelated stock. I do know that I am not interested in locks or 2-piece barrels.
Has anyone picked up one of these? If so, what "dash" are they? Are they in good shape? If this is as good a deal as it looks to be, I might just get in on it.

These are all over gun shows, but for a much higher price. They have the LEO markings on the left side below the cylinder, and show a LOT of external wear/abuse, but have good lock up.
For $200 they would be a great truck or range gun, AFTER a very good cleaning.

I already have a 64 so don't need one. But if I did, I might buy one of those. I'd call them, ask them to pick out as-nice-as-possible, make sure they guarantee it to work. If they have any with good-condition wood grips, I'd think that would be your best bet. Don't worry about scratches. If you don't like them, you can sand them out with 1500 & 2000 grit sandpaper, then polish it up. You can ask them to pick you one out - if you want pre-lock, pre-MIM, I think the serial number just has to be older than CBXXXXX. Mine is a CCJ which is pre-lock, hammer mounted FP, but has a MIM trigger. It's a 64-5. I saw another one at my LGS that is a CBXXXXX that is only one month newer, but is all pre MIM. They want $295 for it - with new Hogue monogrips, oh and it's a RB - like mine.
Good luck, keep us posted.
Edit: oh, and ask them for RB or SB depending on what you want.

If you are talking about the 64's on GB for $209, my friend Ben just got one. It is a 64-8 with an IL, a 2 piece barrel and round butt. Other than a large #12 stamped on the side it was actually in pretty decent shape...

Yes, Black Sheep, those are the ones I was talking about. I wondered, since the the model 10's they're selling are IL models. I may give them a call and see what exactly they have. Thanks for the input everyone!

I'm considering buying one also. I bought a model 10 from buds about a month ago it is a great shooter and doesn't have an IL. I'm surprised that these would have the locks.....seems that would make them too new to be police trades????? I think I'll have to give them a call Monday...even with the lock $209 is a great price.

I just bought a 10-14 from the same seller, but haven't received it yet. I will post when I get it. It will be my 2nd 10-14 and I am looking forward to getting it.
I already have a 64-4 and a 64-7,and was looking for other newer dash numbers......... I asked him about the 64's and he said he has a few -4, and mostly -5, and -6's left. I wouldn't mind a RB -5 and a -6 to go with my -7. I would also take a -8 if he has any. I'm a rarity, I like the newer Smiths
Expect dings and holster buffing, but I doubt these were fired much. They are priced low because they aren't older Smiths and they are a great deal for shooter or carry guns. Shooter grade 64's are all over gun shows, most are $300 or so, so if you're looking for a utility 64 it might be good to get one or two of these.
I have a feeling these are security trade ins,not police, unless they are from a foreign country.......I know Australian PD's just traded in a bunch of 66-7's so perhaps they dumped a lot of newer Smiths of other flavors too....... since I don't think any US PD's are going to issue 10-14's.

Thanks for the heads up.
I'd been thinking about getting a 64 for a while and was pondering the J&G ones.
Just popped for one of these. I really like fixing up these old duty guns. Another one for the crew!

J&G has had those DAO 64's since I can remember..........they must have thousands of them!
I can't wait to get my 10-14, and I'm fighting the urge to get one of these 64's too. I gave up trying to "justify" another shooter grade 10 or 64, since I already have a bunch of them and I'm still looking for excuses to get more...like "I don't have a -6!"

I'm tempted...though if these were .357s instead of the .38s on gun broker, I would have jumped on one by now...just not sure if I need a .38 with the .357s I've got...

$210 is a great price for a tight, functional 64 even if they are holster buffed, etc. If what I'm seeing at gun shows is any representation, they are all showing at least a decade of holster carry and use, but these are duty guns, not safe queens. I think Brinks used DAO 64's, but I'm guessing a large security or armored car company just traded in a whole lot of 10's and 64's.
From what I have read, gun makers will buy a LE agency or security companies old guns, for example, hypothetically........S&W sells Loomis-Fargo 10,000 .40 M&P's, for $300 a unit, plus a spare parts contract and armorer training, and Loomis agrees to upgrade their guns with S&W every 7 years.......in addition, S&W will buy back all of Loomis' duty guns, thousands of 10' and 64's,many of which have been in service since the 1980's...... for almost nothing per each gun, maybe $40 a gun. Then S&W will sell the used duty guns to a distributor for like $80-100 each. This is why we are seeing these for $200-210 each.
You won't find 65's for this price, although there's another dealer who has (had?) a bunch of Austrian Customs trade in 65's for about $300 or so.
Overall, I say get them now.......it won't be long before we stop seeing large quantities of trade-in S&W revolvers. The LE agencies went to autoloaders years ago, now the security companies are getting rid of the wheelguns. I think in 5 years we will all be saying "Man I remember those $200 S&W 10's and 64's!"
The last I saw prices like these, was about 10 years ago I saw a table full of holster beat Model 10 4" HB's (don't remember what - number) mixed in with Taurus 82's and they were marked "S-W Taurus .38 any $150" and people were gobbling those up.......

It is a great price, which caught my attention. If you ever learn of that dealer, I'd love it if you'd let me know...favorite wheel gun calibers are the .357 and .41 that Smith made...
We'll see how the seller answers my email, and I may pounce on one.

Thanks again, all...especially the info on which engineering changes are available. I could certainly live with a -5 or -6. I will have to shoot them an email I suppose!

They seem like good people to deal with, they answered my email quickly and I called them to pay for my 10-14 and the transaction was smooth. Now I just wait for my 10-14 to arrive at my dealer and hope I got a good one!
I love 4" Round Butt Heavy Barrel 10's and 64's, and so I would go for a RB -5 and I think all the -6's are RB's. If I got a RB -5 the first thing I would do is put newer style factory Magnas on it.
I always take the "reviews" on deals like this with a grain of salt, since some people pay $200 for a sight-unseen trade in duty gun and then when it's not NIB unfired are unhappy I've seen it happen before.......I'm sure anyone looking for a utility gun that they don't have to worry about the cosmetics of, will be happy. Perfect range guns, carry pieces, truck and tackle box guns, etc.
I believe the 64-6's have the frame mounted firing pins, and the -5's have MIM triggers but are the last 64's with hammer mounted firing pins. I don't have my SC of S&W here and I don't know as much about 64's as I do the 10's.

Interesting the 64's are advertised at $249 on the Sportsmans website. Seems like a good deal if I could get one with wooden grips.

I called SOSSDIRECT to close the deal on the one I ordered off GB. Spoke with ryan there. Very friendly and helpful. I wanted a no-lock one, round butt, with wood stocks, if available.
Ryan said the guns are all w/o lock.
The wood stocks are on SB guns.
All RB guns come with goodyears.
So, my RB is on the way. Stocks i can find. And another pair of rubbers for the ever-growing junk box.

I was the one bidding against Ben on that 64. He got a super deal on that one. I have satalite internet, and on my last bid attempt I could not bring the gun up to place my bid on it with 3 or 4 minutes left.
It looked very clean in the pictures. It should make him a great gun.
My guess is most of these guns are going to be Security Guard guns, Armored Car Guard guns, or Prison Guard guns. I doubt anyone doing the ordering is worried about the lock, MIM Parts, or 2 Piece Barrels. The locks are not used, and very seldom give any problems, so no big deal if they have the lock or not.

I just received mine from Ryan. I am a happy camper. The gun shows very little wear and is a -6 with RB. I'm so glad to have another 64. Like a dummy I sold my last one but that won't happen again.

That must have been a different auction Bob. The seller had almost 50 of the Model 64 trade-ins with a $209 "buy it now" so no bidding was necessary.

Why do I always find these things out a day late and a dollar short!!?? Noticed this thread the very same day after already ordering a m64 with a bobbed hammer (which I'm not crazy about) from J&G's at a slightly higher price...who'm I kidding $65 or so bucks less to get the one I'd ruther have in the first place...the S|A D|A with a full hammer...oh well, live and learn...getting a little tired of living that mantra. Maybe I can scrounge enough to come up with one more order??? Maybe I should just forget I eversaw this thread..

I feel your pain. I was [] that close to ordering one from J&G several times when this thread popped up.
Some days you eat the bear...some days the bear eats you.
DA shooting is what these are made for.
Do not weep, you still have a fine revo + (and don't forget) it has NYPD provenance.
Mine will probably be marked "Guido's Guard Service".

It's threads like this that have caused me to have and own no less than 7 or 8 'Truck Guns'. Oddly enough I only own 2 trucks.

The NYPD NY-1 64's are way cool, I would not feel like you overpaid for one of those Like was said above, these are duty guns not single action Bullseye guns..........DAO is just fine, and even though I am far from an expert handgun shooter I am able to do some great target work with all of my DAO revolvers.
I'm happy I scored a 64-8, I wanted the latest model of the 64 to go along with my 64-7 security trade in.........I may have to see if I can swing a 64-6 before they run out of these.

I just sealed the deal on three of the Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore Model64 pistols.
How do you guys think I did as a first time purchaser of S&W revolvers?
I figure I can give one to my mom, one to my sister and my wife and I will use the third one as a plinking revolver/woods gun.
These pistols would make great stocking stuffers for all the big kids in your family. Christmass is right around the corner...

You did pretty well, IMHO.
I get visitation rights to mine tomorrow. I won't be able take full custody until wednesday.

Thanks, I did a good bit of research and think this deal will work out very well.
That sucks soo bad you can't take her home with you.
Call your senator and work on getting those laws changed. I know it's a long shot but it's all about grass roots, you know?
Anyway, we'll need to post pictures of our Model 64s when we do get them home and post them here.

I've no real problem with shooting DAO revolvers, the thing is I enjoy S/A equally, or more, and a bobbed hammer on a revolver just doesn't seem "right" to me. It's purely personal preference but not a deal breaker by any means. I'm still excited for it to arrive! And am sure it'll make a perfectly serviceable truck/house gun, whichever role I choose for it. The hammer will stick in my mind though until I either "fix" it or find a way to swing one of these 64's from SOS on my limited income...the gears are turning...

I noticed those 64's have been ticking down on the auction, one day it was like 60 left, and today it's like 35
I'm tempted to go for a 2nd one but honestly it would be hard for me to justify right now.....with a 64-3, -7, and soon a -8 in the collection..........not to mention the pile of trade in Ruger .38 and .357's........I can't try to talk myself into "another shooter" hahaha
Speaking of NYPD DAO .38's, this Ruger GPNY is one of my favorites and the lack of a SA feature doesn't keep the gun from shooting ragged holes at 25 yards.

Well, I saw my $209 M64 today. BNZ dates it mid 1993, 64-5. I selected the square butt wood grip one. Color me impressed, immaculate condition. Not a scratch, dent or ding on it. Very slight cylinder ring. The finish looks like brand new only aged 18 years. The grips look like they were taken off the day the gun was originally purchased and reinstalled for resale. Absolutely no wear. There is no question this gun did not spend day in day out in someones holster. I'm guessing it lived in someones drawer for 18 years.

Mine's Here - WOW WOW WOW
2-Day Fedex, mine arrived this morning. To say that I'm pleased would be a gross understatement.
I had phoned Ryan with my request for a no-lock RB. This one is a -5, with what I believe are MIM hammer and trigger. No biggie there, as it does have the hammer nose firing pin. Locks up tight as a tick.
With old cop guns, there's always a chance of getting Barney Fife's that fell out of his holster every time he climbed in or out of his 62 Ford patrol car. Not so with this one. Agency markings were cut into the butt of the grip, none on the gun itself.
A few minor scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard is all I see. Expected state of police cleanliness, or lack thereof. I field stripped it immediately and its on my bench soaking in Kroil. Threw the scrungy goodyears in my junk grip box.
Plan is to do do a clean and polish, light action job, and find a set of RB Magnas. A polished T-Grip adapter would finish things off.
And now....the images please!

I was just gonna say, the listing just closed........either someone called and just bought the rest of them, he's gonna relist them for a different price because all of the -4's are gone, or he's gonna seperate them by features or condition........who knows.

The LGS owner saw mine when it arrived this morning and said he might grab a bunch of then.
Figured that he could clean them up and make a c-note on each.

Just took a look at their website. The Model 64's are now $249.00 with a limited supply.
I was just about to post a set of Coke Bottle grips I had for sale to fund one of the 64's. Oh well...such is life.

I have to call him today to pay for my 64-8, I'll ask him what happened to the 64's
I was tempted to try for a 64-6, maybe not now.......probably better off, I have other things that need $200 spent on them

All, I heard from Ryan this morning and the 64's are sold out but he said a new batch was on the way. He did not give an ETA but said it was a done deal and they would be available soon.

I was told the same thing when I emailed him, a large batch of 64's is coming in soon.
I hope there's more 10's too.

model 64-5 from SOSS
just finished rehabbing my 64-5 I purchased from SOSS on gun-broker, after a complete stripping, cleaning, bead blast I did myself and replacing the hand due to a carry-up issue I think it's a pretty decent shooter, like everyone else I junked the rubber grips, now what to replace them with............

I know this thread has been dormant a few weeks, but looks like I should have jumped on the band wagon while it while it was still in town.
I've gone to their website and on GB several times now..'NADA'.
Guess we can keep our fingers crossed and a sharp eye out on their site.
