Default gun show find... 4" 617 no dash

I hit the gun show at Collinsvile on Saturday hoping to find my current most wanted Smith (3" 625 pre-lock). Had no luck on that, but i did find something that was a lttle lower on my wish list, a 4" 617 no dash. It's in great condition, and still has the Combats, but no box. And the price was well below what i was expecting to see on the tag. Bought it ten minutes after the doors opened..pays to be there early

pics to come after the silly waiting period.

i was shocked that that particular dealer had it marked for $595 when he normally is so proud of everything S&W that he sells. And he even knocked it down to $550.. taxes made it $585.75. not a spectacular deal, but not too bad.
BTW, ser. # is BFM 72XX

Yes....good deal. You have to "find one" first to even try and give ANY amount of money for it. Pretty scarce in my neck-of-the-woods. I would trade my 6-inch and maybe a little boot for a 4-inch in a heartbeat.

That's a good deal. It's not on my list right now as I have a 34, but if it were, I would have gladly paid that.

Default 617

I just bought one a month ago. Paid $735.00 out the door.
Great shooter and just as important to me is that it closely matches my 4" 357/38Spl. and much much less costly to shoot!
What is "no dash"?
Enjoy it but BE SAFE!
Bill

A no dash is the first of the M617's with a full K frame, combat grips, and no lock or MIM parts. Highly collectable, especially in 4". Later guns were cheapend down a bit, had round butt frames with Goodyear,(rubber) grips and internal locks as yours does. The dash two had the 10 round cylinder made of aluminum alloy. Not a big selling point. Picture is my no dash 4" M617 one of my favorite 22's. Big Larry

Yes, yours has the 10 rd. stainless steel cyl as all the later ones do. I think the M617-2 was the only one made with the aluminum cylinder. Folks just were not ready for an alloy part at the time and they discontinued it very soon after it came out. Didn't match the blasted finish on these guns too well. I have a 6" M617-2 and I have never been dis satisfied with it or have even thought to have the cyl. replaced. It shoots as well as my M617 no dash 4" and my M617 no dash 6". I did replace the Goodyear grips with custom Rosewood Hogues and installed a TH and TT in it. This too is one of my favorite 22 handguns and I have Rugers, Colts, Walthers, and quite a few older S&W's. I also put the proper combat grips on the M617 6" no dash after I took this pic. Big Larry

Larry, is that 4" the same one in your previous pic?? if so, which front sight are you currently using?

I was up the road in Springfield a few weeks ago and a guy had a 4 and 6 inch on the same table, along with a 6 inch 686. He was asking $850.00 on each of them. I don't think he was real ready to sell them at that price.

You can "ASK" anything you want for a 4" 617 ....
You might not get what your asking but you can "ASK".

Last local gun show a dealer had a 4" no dash 617 wearing a nice set of football cutout diamond targets no box or docs...
Only "ASKING" $1400 bucks.

Same dealer had at least a dozen very nice S&W handguns,
Each one priced at almost exactly double the current market value.
My assumption was that he doesnt like to do transfer paperwork.

I paid $639 for this no-dash 4" on GunBroker two months ago (shown below with my 6" no-dash). You did well!

I had to change out the front sight to a taller one as the gun was shooting about 8" high at 25 yards. Now, with a 6 o'clock hold, it will shoot the black out at the same distance. The sight is a black ramp from S&W and I had a local gunsmith drill it out and I installed it. BTW, I paid very high to get this gun, but the dash 2 was under $400 + tax, and the 6" no dash was $575 in the box at a gun show. One can pay high to get a nice specimen only to get another for a giveaway deal. We have all been there and done that. Big Larry

Yep, you did real good. Have 3 .22's and don't need another but that 617 would be my first choice if I was in the market for one.

Congrats on that beauty!

Did you leave out the 22-rifles, or just don't have any?

Hey....I have located a 317 "parts kit"....wonder if it's worth $150? It has, everything but the frame. I have two 317 no-locks as well.

One of the early non underlug 617's. Came with Combats as pictured. They also made a few hundred in 6" would LOVE to find one.

Been looking for a nice4" M 617 with box etc...tough to find.

17-3, 18-3, 317, 34-1, 63, DW22(ugh), +lever, bolt, pump rifles and I probably still want a 43c and SP101( old6 shot). Colts are way out of my league, much too pricey.

Frank237, i really like your no-underlug.

This has been a K22 year for me because these are the only Smiths i have bought or traded for all year. wasn't really looking hard to find these 22s, just lucked into them. and they were all great deals.
both 5 screws are 1953. I got the 6" 617 just 2 months ago...for 75 cents less than the 4"

my only other 22s are a Mark II, and a stainless Marlin 60

440,

Beautiful pair on the LEFT!! I'm very partial to the early guns. I think you did pretty good.

New to the S&W Forum and need a little help. Just acquired a Mod. 617. The revolver is not marked "Smith & Wesson" on the barrel and has very faint impressions of the S&W insignia and other markings. It is nickel plated or satin stainless and has "1 of 200 sets" etched below the cylinder. I have heard that if the barrel is not marked Smith and Wesson on the barrel it is NOT a Smith. Does anyone know if there are any exceptions to this? I have several other Smiths and they all have the proper markings. This revolver has the factory S&W grips and appears to be a Smith in every other way.

Welcome to the Forum. I'll try to help with your inquiry but there are others far more knowledgeable than me.

I am assuming from your mention that the gun might be nickel-plated that someone had it buffed and in the process, the rollmarkings were partially or completely buffed off.

Ed

Thanks Ed. I would bet you are right. Wish I would have thought of that before I bought it. The gun has a 6 inch barrel, looks great, shoots great and is an early model. If I could figure out how to attach a photo I would include one. Thanks again.

Thanks , GA Targets are my favorite as I have long fingers.
Is it the shape of the combats that you dont like?

BTW, You have a very good eye as that is an old SS rear site,
bought it at a show so dont know its history but the only guns
I know of that had a SS rear site were the early Model 66/67.

Seeing the early 617 no lug is motivating me to make a 617 with a Model 66 style underlug by removing the extra metal from a factory barrel..

There are -2's with stainless cylinders. Purely from a shooting standpoint, the Hogue's are some of the best grips I've ever put my hands on. I thought about putting some round to square Eagle "retrogrips" on my 617, but liked the Hogues enough to go with their checkered monogrip in Goncalo Alves.
