I finally found the 586 I've been trying to locate for some time. I've owned more than a few 686 4 inch models but have always sold them. I just like blued revolvers. So I was at a shop in Columbia, PA last month, and there it sat. I put down the deposit before I put down the 586. I sold an Eotech 516, and now the 586 is mine. No box, and I can't say the grips look great. But some Ahrends should class it up a bit. It doesn't have the M modification. Is that a real problem? I shot it with 38 SPLs and 357 125 JHPs and it worked fine. I'm quite pleased with this find.

Congrats on the new 586, you will love it. Also, unless you have issues with it, there is really no need to send it back to Smith for the modification unless you really want it done.

Yes I agree congratulations. My first Smith was a 586 and I still own and shoot it.

Nice 586.....I like the blued ones also.

One of my favorite guns to take to deer camp and for hikes is my 586.

I'm new to this forum and very nice to meet everyone.. My apologies if I make mistakes at first.. I've always been a big fan of the 686 and own quite a few.. I'm very rough on these guns and appreciate the SS over the blued due to the amount of water I am around.. Last week while cruising gun stores hoping to find a steal on another S&W I came across a stainless steel 586 no -either.. I bought it immediately..No joke.. I did not know they existed.. No it is not nickel.. I even took the grips off and filed down quite a ways to verify this.. The only info I can find on a SS 586 are presentation models with 6" barrels.. Mine is 4".. Does anyone have any information on 4" Stainless Steel 586's?

Congrats on your non-modded no dash 586. I had the good fortune, as you have, of turning up one of these gems a couple of years back- 4", like yours. It is as good shooting a revolver as I could want, and I have had no problem with 125gr .357 factory loads. Does anybody recall if the "problem" occurred with a specific brand of ammunition in this bullet weight? If so, please PM me with that info- want to try it out myself.

586 is blued or nickle
686 is stainless.

As others have curtly mentioned the stainless models were 686's what you have is a miss-marked 686. This condition is not that rare, and happens with various frame sizes and finishes.
This condition has caused more than a few posters on this forum to be confused.

My friend has had that forever, and it works well for him. I bought a 6" 586 a few years back, and I could not shoot it. I actually have had the same problem with several guns over the years, and it is definitely an anomaly of the shooter, not the revolver. My buddy shot mine as well as he shot his own.(peeved me a little...) I traded a NIB K-22 in the Bangor Punta box to get it, and I shoulda kept the K-22. Live & learn. I'm pretty sure the .22 woulda shot ok for me, but alas, I shall never know.

Not a model one.. You guys are wrong about the 586.. Yes it is rare and some are mis-marked but not mine.. I'm a novice on this site but not S&W.. I was hoping for more educated opinions than the obvious.. I already stated I own many 686's and my love for S&W..I contacted Smith.. Some 586's were made in Stainless in 6" for police presentation.. My 4" is part of a stainless police special order that fell though in the 80's.. Either 200ish were made or 2,000ish.. I have to wait to see what else my $75 gets me in research.. jhvaughan2, thank you for actually using manners in your response.. I walked out of the store with this Stainless Steel 586 for $375 including tax because the owners acted as most of you have and assumed too much.. No telling what this real rare 586 is actually worth..

Great revolver and congrats. Have shot a few thousand rounds of .38's and .357's out of my no dash 4" nickel 586. I never had the "M" mod done and not one malfunction. If I was going to use it as a SD weapon I would have it done for that one in one thousand chance it may bind up at the worst possible time.

I love the ol' 6 shot k-frames.....Hardly ever see a good 586 for sale anymore....looks great..

gumpys It is 100% not nickel.. If you read my first post I stated that I took the grips off an filed down deeply to find no carbon steel... Just second guessing myself.. It is solid 100% stainless.. I know the difference.. You are definitely wrong and obviously can't physically tell the difference between nickle and stainless.. S&W confirmed this too by the serial number.. I was hoping for some constructive advice from this forum instead of gun shop no it alls.. I have learned in life that whenever you think you know everything about something, then you have failed and should start over.. This is a never ending learning curve.. I have over 60 S&W revolvers in my collections.. These obvious answers were answered the day I purchased the gun.. Besides any false definitives I would appreciate someone with actual insight to the Stainless 586.. Please something constructive? If not I will wait for my $75 research from the Smith historian to be delivered to me.. If you do not have any constructive response, please do not reply..

I have a number of no-dash L frames and never had a problem with the ones that were not modified. It looks like yours has the S&W logo on the right side? I think that's the case only with very early guns. I'd be curious to know what the three letters at the fron of the serial number are. Congratulations...great gun. Have fun with it.

I also have a 4" stainless 586, but it is "mis-marked" as a 686!

weyerbacher ~ You snagged a great gun there. I believe the 586 and 686 should be included in S&W's "best of" catalog. Congratulations and enjoy!

Rggeer ~ Instead of hijacking the OP's thread and then "beating up" on members that offered their opinions, why not show some respect for the knowledgeable people that have been here for years? You joined the forum yesterday, have made three posts, and you already have a gunslinger attitude with all these guys ? Try starting a new thread with a different attitude and you might get the answers you're looking for. I for one would like to hear more about your gun if it is truly what you claim it is.

Well from your pics it looks nickel all day long, maybe learn how to take some pics, and you know what you need to go somewhere else, this forum is not for you. If you already know everything why you asking for info then. Also, glad to see you just joined and feel the need to bad mouth everyone on here, someone should show you the door.

This will give you an idea of what yours would look like with the S&W combat grips from gungripsupply.com. They fit my 586 (no dash) perfectly and are very comfortable.

It would be very interesting to see what you learn from S&W on your unusual gun, perhaps you could post it. Seems like a very unusual handgun to me and I for one would like to know more.

I would not be on here if I knew everything, like some think they do.. weyerbacher, thank on the advise on starting my own thread.. I know S&W but these threads are knew to me.. I'll show more pictures if you would like.. My great grandfathers 1st and 2nd model are astounding considering they are 100yrs old and fire perfectly.. S&W has not changed much since.. Hard to reinvent the wheel..

Just got a 586 nickel, it is outstanding. gun store guy asked me was I gonna fire it. it looks like new. of courde I am.

I'm actually tempted to safe this beauty for a bit. A LGS just got in a 686-3 4 inch at a price I can live with. I might buy it so I don't beat up the 586 too much.

Hearsedriver and 586L-Frame, I notice a difference between your 586's (no dash). One has the S&W logo on the left side plate and the other doesn't. Is this because of different years of manufacture?

Rggeer, we'll be happy to see what Roy Jinks says about your stainless 586 when you letter it and post the results. We all know that nothing is impossible with Smith & Wesson.
