Just picked up a birthday present to myself - S&W 586 No Dash 4"

I know this is a common question, but I was wondering if anyone here could help me with a date from the serial number. Seller claimed 'he thought' 84-85, and I believe the 'no dash' would put it between ~'81-86, but I'm sure someone here can correct me on that.

Anyway, any guidance you can offer is appreciated/
Serial: AJS56XX

Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson shows that the serial number you posted was shipped Aug - Oct, 1985. I have a M586 with serial number AJY56XX. Good looking M586. Congrats on the find.

I appreciate the quick response, and am anxious to get this to the range. If all goes well, I'll hope to have a follow up range report after the weekend.

Welcome to the Forum. Nice sixgun.

The grips are Altamont I think, you can find them online.

Thanks for the compliments. Semperfi looks to be right.

Altamont - Pistol Grips

I had been planning on buying similar Ahrends or Hogue grips before, until I found this gun. I loved the grips on it already, and they fit very well. I also like that they still have the S&W medallions.

Took it to the range this weekend, and ran 2 boxes through her. The gun shot great, didn't have any fliers really until I was about 50 rounds in and it was getting dirty, then after a quick brush, she was back online. The target attached was my first 3 cylinders, 18rounds, from 25' shooting both SA and DA. Nothing to write home about, but I was plenty pleased for the first time handling this gun.

Looks great! My 586 is a favorite. Since yours is a no-dash, check that the factory recall modification was performed. There should be a "M" stamped in the frame adjacent to the serial number.

It has not been performed yet. My understanding is that it only affects certain 357 mag ammo, and the issue was soft primers on only certain ammo?

I've only shot .38 specials through it for now, and I plan to send it in, I'm just not sure I want to part with it just yet. Can anyone elaborate on the severity of the recall? Is this something I need to do immediately?
