For range ammo, I would try CCI Standard Velocity. It causes less problems in my 34-1 than high velocity ammo, which can be a pain to extract due to case expansion.

Mine too. I have a 4" later non pinned gun that I bought used. I have several cases of ammo I bought at Kmart years back for $7.90 a brick. It is cheepo Winchester Wildcat and I shoot it from all my 22's with the exception of my M52 Winchester target rifles and with those it is red box Ely. I have had no problems with this ammo. Most all 22 ammo is dirty and messes up your gun unless it is a semi-auto. The thing you must remember, is a M63 is a kit gun, not a fine tuned target revolver. For the most part, it will not shoot in the K22 or M617 class. I would never even consider expensive match ammo in a "plinker". Big Larry

Make sure the charge holes are bone dry. Oil or lube lets the cases slide back when firing. Joe

I have two 617 no-dashes that like Federal 38-grain copper-plated hollow-points better than target fodder from Remington, Federal or Winchester. Federal's load number is 712 and it is on every box's end flap; I buy mine from MidwayUSA for $34 per 500.

It also burns fairly clean, for 22LR ammo. If I clean the gun fairly soon after shooting it, the deposits on the face of the cylinder wipe right off with solvent.

I've also found that most can benefit from an ever so slight chamfer of the charge holes. Worked on mine. Seems like the rims of .22 casings just ain't formed as sharp as they use to be. Plus a sharp edge scrapes up the dry wax case lube and it packs against the rim. So they seat a bit high and they drag across the frame as the cylinder turns.

Bud,

Two things. (1) Small frame revolvers typically have stiffer actions than the K frames and above. (2) And lead bullets have a generous coating of wax that can tend to gum up the works. I have found the copper coated bullets are cleaner. And whenever you get some dragging, check under the extractor, might need cleaning.

Have fun with your new gun; I have one and really like it.

It's funny how guns react to different ammunitions. I have a new 617 and went shooting for the first time with Federal Champions which come in a box of 525. At about the 250 mark the cylinder started to become harder to turn. I looked at the gun and there was a bridge of lead that had formed from the top strap down to the cylinder. I stopped shooting, went home and cleaned the mess up. Took forever. Next time I went shooting I took CCI blazer long rifle and had only very minor leading after 400 rounds. It's funny because the Federal were copper plated and the CCI were bare lead point. Anyone have an explanation?

Also make sure the barrel cylinder gap is clean. My 617 jams when it is shot from crud closing the gap.

All good replies-try another manufacturer's bulk ammo.
Remember this, everyone groans and moans about rimfires being more persnickey than centerfires. Go shoot your Model (insert model # here) centerfire 1000 rounds (or 300 for that matter) in a range session without cleaning and see if it gets a little gummed up, gets a little stiff or has trouble extracting.

Thank you -thank you very much-

What you are describing happened to me with my new 63 this past summer. I was shooting CCI Mini-Mags, then Winchester. Switched to Federal Bulk and the problem went away, not a hitch since. Clean and dry thoroughly, as mentioned earlier, it's critical. It doesn't take much to gum up the works for such close tolerances, sometimes you can't even see the gunk w/o a magnifying glass.

I mix CCI Velocitors/Stingers first with Federal 36gr plated 550 packs from Wally World with no problems. Subsequent Stingers are a bit more difficult to load/unload - but still do-able. I've shot most of a brick - at least 400+ - in a week or two, with no problems - other than my vanity... I couldn't bear letting it get that nasty. A steady diet of CCI Velocitors or Stingers would never make that round count... I couldn't afford them!!

Merry Christmas!

John

I've read a lot of good things about CCI standard velocity.
I bought a brick at Dick's last week and will see how I like it.
My 63's don't much like the Rem bulk pack I've been feeding them.

Keep the cylinder area under the extractor star clean of powder residue, by using a soft toothbrush, when shooting at the range.

my opinion- bulk ammo is cheap in bulk for a reason- lower quality control and lesser grade components. Try regular boxed 22's-cci standard velocity is my choice- and see the difference. also unlike a regular centerfire where you can just drop rounds in and gravity fully seats them in the chamber I've found with the recessed S&W cylinder you need to make sure you push them all the way in.

And I wish I didn't experience it, but the barrel to cylinder gap on my 617 is VERY VERY tight. Once I clean that area up on my revolver it returns back to normal function.

One M17 and two M34-1 Kit Guns...all I use is CCI. Standard or high velocity, they all work fine in my guns. I order in bulk off the net.
