Default Model 66

Is a -4 a desirable 66 model? Does it still have all the good parts?

Thanks Sam

Others, more knowledgeable will come along, but my 66-4 still has the forged trigger, hammer mounted fp, no lock...so I'm going to say YES.

It's not a model with the dreaded lock, which most of us hate. Could still be had with square butt, which a lot of people prefer. It's not Pinned and Recessed, which was last featured on the 66-1. That is a biggie with some S&W collectors, me included.
I guess the 66-4 is still a pretty good model, all things considered.

I think the -4 might be the best of the 66s as it includes all the updates before the change to MIM parts and locks.

The first photo below is what your 2-1/2" -4 is going to look like. The second is a later shot of the same gun with its -2 cousins.

And there's nothing wrong with MIM, it's just different.

The lock is the only bad part.

Yes, the 66-4 is a good variant. Last of the everything you need and nothing you don't S&W revolvers. Regards 18DAI

Is there a BAD Model 66 dash number?

I have a 2.5" 66-4 and a 4" 66-7 and both will last longer than I will, and shoot better than I can.

A lot of people don't like the cosmetics of MIM but the guns still work as well as the forged part guns. There have been many threads on here about this, including info from LEO's who say that they have seen lots of failures on the range with forged part pin-in-hammer guns. MIM has only been used for about 10 years or so by S&W so there's not a ton of field data yet.
