Your 48 is a beautiful classic that cannot be easily replaced. I think you would regret letting it go.

My .02; don't do it. Your .22WMR gun is much more desireable than the .17HMR.
I'd consider paying real money for yours, but I wouldn't take a second look at a 647.
JMHO.

You know you're getting screwed when a dealer is willing to trade you something straight across.

I agree with the others. Buy the 17 outright but don't trade. You are getting the short end of the stick.

I have a 48-3 and a 647. If I were you, I would find a way to keep the 48 and buy the 647 outright. According to Mr. Jinks, he things that around 2,000 647s were manufactured, total. 48s haven't been made since the mid-1980s.
Even with that, I would keep the 48 and try and buy the 647 outright.

I agree with what the other posts have said, but will add as far as accuracy my 647 may be one of my most accurate revolvers ,it will shoot one inch groups at 25 yds all day long.

Keep the 48!
If you can afford the Perf. Center version - S&W is listing their Perf. Center .17 HMR once again but its not real pretty nor inexpensive!!

I am by no means an expert, but if I walked into a gun store and saw these guns lying side by side I wouldn't even look at the 17HMR. I would keep what you have.

I would also like to have a 647 (wish there was a no lock model) but would never trade a nice 48 for a 647.

Do not condemn that beautiful 48 to a certain death at the hands of a dealer!

I'm with the others, if you want that 647 try and make it an addition not a trade. If you want to sell that model 48 because it's become nothing to you but a dust collector I would suggest that you post it for sale here and not use it as trade fodder. Because I don't know of any dealer who will offer full retail for a trade, in general they only offer about 40% of the full retail price if they are feeling "generous".

They are both safe queens, as they are both collection guns. Keep the 48. Put the 647 on Lay-A-Way. Or save up for it and when you get to about 70% make him an offer. If it has sat there collecting dust he may just sell it! I would not trade one collector gun for another. No logic to that. You build up a collection. Keep the 48 so you do not go kicking yourself later!

This is your best deal. If you have the hots for the 17, buy it, but don't trade.

All yinz enablers should be ashamed!
Well now, lemme see ....there seems to be a common, prevailing thread going on here.....recommendation appears to be: keep the 48, to go further into gun-trouble with Mrs.Speedo, and to acquire yet another expensive boat anchor. I dunno folks, I suppose that I have been led astray by less forthright wisdom; and my actions could surely be reconciled by claiming that my full and thorough research ("...man, I've really got the hots for that 647") was supported by consultation with recognized subject matter experts (...yinz guys should really be ashamed of yourselves).
A little more background information for context on this decision: I'm already two guns into 2012: a really nice CZ452-American (17 HM2, no less), and a really, really nice pre-war 38 M&P; both a bit on the pricey-side and snuck (...sneaked?) into the house in the middle of the night without SWMBO being aware of them. That 6" M48-4 has sat unshot in the back of my safe for about 6 years and I've got other K22's that get shot a lot; even another M48 (an 8-3/8" edition) that also goes unshot. 22WMR ammo is about as pricey as 17HRM; my poker and gun fund has taken some hits by the above-mentioned acquisitions (and an unfortunate recent turn of events in Atlantic City); and I've still got the hots for that 647. However, I suppose that it could be put on lay-away.
Photos and outcome report of the ensuing "hunkering" session to be posted. Thanks for all of the responses; I'll most likely keep the M48. -S2
