Default Never Say Never - 629 Mountain Gun

The interesting thing about Smith and Wesson is what pops up from time to time. In this case it is a 6 and 1/2 inch .44 Magnum Mountain Gun. It is basically a factory custom, done in the early days of the Performance Center. The grips are by Coco Bolos by John Culina.

THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL, AND VERY INTERESTING REVOLVER. IF YOU ARE THE ORIGINAL OWNER, OR EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT, DO YOU HAVE THE BOX, OR ANYTHING SUPPORTING ITS AUTHENTICITY ? ? ? THE LASER ETCHED SCRIPT SURE DOES LOOK LIKE THE SCRIPT ON MY MOUNTAIN GUNS……

BY MY QUESTION, I HAVE NO INTENT TO DISCREDIT YOU, OR THIS BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER. IN CLOSE TO 6 DECADES OF DEALING WITH FIREARMS, I HAVE LEARNED THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, AND FIREARMS ARE NOT ALWAYS WHAT THEY APPEAR TO BE. (EVEN FAKE BOXES AND LABELS CAN BE ACQUIRED ON THE INTERNET). I WOULD DEEM THIS BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER TO BE WELL WORTHY OF A LETTER FROM THE ESTEEMED MR. ROY JINKS…..

I'm not the original owner but I have the box and the correspondence. It was originally a Classic and was rebuilt and marked as a Mountain Gun in the Performance Center.

That sure looks like a 6 1/2 inch .44 Special barrel, with different lettering.

May have been, but there are no signs that it was ever roll marked as a .44 Special, and if I remember right the 624's were roll marked. So it may have been an unfinished barrel blank.

I like the esthetics. The long cylinder with the long profile barrel are elegant to me. Personally, I think it is what the production Mountain Gun should have been. JMHO

Beautiful piece! Color me envious.
I also think that barrel looks like a 624.
Coincidentally, I was just cleaning this gun this evening:

They used the tapered 44spl barrels on the 44 mag mountain guns to save weight.

...Smith should have used a 5" slim barrels on their MGs...that would have really made them unique....
