What is the Meaning of the Numbers?
I am assuming the number running across the bottom of the grip frame that is exposed after removing the stocks/grips is the serial number AAP32XX?
With the grips off on the right side I find a circled "B", 7541, a small circle at the bottom left angle of a triangle with a "Z" in that. On the left side I find what may be an inverted "T" or "L", "LV", 46886, "S", and under that "F 32".
I opened the action, and with the cylinder out/open on the frame is MOD 681. On the crane is A1, 46886 and "S".
I have a S&W model 681 with a 4" full under lug barrel six shot 357 magnum. The wooden grips are a little scuffed and there are some scratches on the frame. The lock up is nice and tight. OTD price was $400. I'm now the proud owner of this revolver, sadly no box. ASAP I'll be getting the camera out for a photo.
Thanks in advance for any information you all can provide, mike from st pete.

Looks like it was shipped in 1982. Serial number is on the butt of M681, the others marks are, so I have been told, factory markings that mean nothing, or inspection marks. Hope that helps. BTW, congrats on the M681, good price and a great L frame revolver.

And what would you do to restore the grips?

It probably came with the smaller (Magna) service stocks.

Thanks for the link and explanation.
Now I have more investigation to do. I know there is a thread on the grips and to which revolver they belong.
