I have a chance to buy a 649 no dash for an ok deal ($350) and was wanting to get some opinions. I have a 642 PP Pro I really like and was thinking of picking up another .38 Spl J frame when i came onto this one.
I'm just not sure the 649 offers anything special over the 640/642 or a 36/637 and I'm not sure the price is so great to get this one over a new one. The owner is a retired LEO and this was his BUG and shows the wear that would be expected. Other than some finish wear and non OEM rubber grips the gun is nice and tight.

I have a 649-2 and a 649 both .38 Specials.
They are good shooters.
I have used them as carry guns and will again. Right now I'm mostly carrying an old M38.
Have had other snubs, but like the old Bodyguard series best of the ones I've used.

I paid less for both of mine but that was quite a few years ago.
I would look at another at the price you mentioned.

I have seven, 2-M649, 4-M649-2, 1-M649-4. My wife and I carry M649 as our BUG/OG/SD. They are pictured here. In all, I have fifteen Bodyguards. Love 'em.

Around here, that $350 for a no-dash 649 would be a great deal, and I would have already bought it.

$350.00 sounds like a good deal if the gun checks out ok.

I love my 649, ideal carry gun. I doubt this gun would offer much over your 642 except it's been carried... you won't affect the condition, and it's prior owner bet on it's reliability. You don't want to carry a questionable gun.

Since you have the 642, I wouldn't buy it as a range gun... too many other Smiths to try... just my $.02.

In my area $350 is a great deal. They run around $400 to $450. I got a nickel 49 this summer for $278 in nice shape. I just fell into that one.

in my country you could sell a truck load of them for that price. If you don't want it PM me.

Just buy it. At that price even if you don't like it you won't have any trouble getting your money back out of it, and maybe a few bucks more.

There are humpback lovers and humpback haters. If you are a lover either of the look or the combination single-action/double-action functionality in a snagless pocket revolver, your decision is already 90% made. I have a 649-5 (with the IL, which doesn't bother me) in .357 Magnum, not that I would ever try to push anything heavier than .38 Specials through that gun without major padded grips on the small frame. Maybe if I was younger and still had some meat on my fingers and in the heel of my hand, I would be more adventurous. These ebony add-ons dress up the gun a bit and are just fine for .38 loads.

I carried a 649 in my boot for several years before putting it back in the safe. I now carry an LCR in the same place.

I paid $399.00 for a M649 no dash, last year. I would be on that one for $350.00 like a pack of dogs on three legged cat! I also have a M49. I really like the look of the "Humpies", not to mention the no snag trigger I can still cock if I want. I carry my M649 in a Don Hume "JIT" or in my pocket.

S&W model 649 no dash is a fine "J" frame for CCW and at $350 is below market price. if the 649, that you are interested in, has no issues.....BUY IT!!

I like the 649 pattern best in the J frames. With the right grips they're hard to beat. @ $350 it's a deal. Snag it, you can always make room for another.

Carry my 649 No dash everyday, as a BUG or OD.

May I ask what kind of grips those are on the 649 in the bottom of the picture.

Not to hijack the thread, but given the 649 expertise here - are all (or none? or some?) of the 649s rated for +P? I assume those with the lock are so rated, but I would be looking for one without the lock.

I find the hump on the back allows me to adjust my thumb position and blade my hand more when drawing from my pocket. I'd buy it and not look back!

$350 sounds like a good price. Just don't let lint collect in that slot behind the trigger or it might tie it up so it'd not work.
