L frame photos
Here is (most of) my current collection of Ls...top to bottom:
686-5 (+) 3" bobbed hammer DAO, night sights
686-5 (+) 4" Mountain Gun
586-1 4" wearing Hogues
581 4" wearing Ahrends
581 with aftermarket 2 1/2" barrel, Round butt conversion and DAO bobbed hammer.
My no-dash 6" 686 didn't make the photo shoot since my Dad has been "borrowing" it for the past few years!
Anyone else care to share?

I would love to have that exact same collection. Sadly, I still do not own a single L frame.
I'm not sure if I love the Mountain Gun or the 4" 581 better. Those are two I want to find for sure.

I only have one L frame, this 686 that I bought new in 1982. IMO one of the most versatile revolvers ever built...

I just got my third "L" frame, a 681.
I'll have to do a photo shoot soon. The other "Ls" are a 686+, and 696.

Kavinsky,
It is a .44 special, round butt alloy frame, Titanium cylinder, 5 shot. Only made from 1999 through 2001. Not a handsome piece of S&W craftsmanship, but it is so ugly it is cute. I have never had a problem with it. Very light, great carry piece. I like it.

Kavinsky,
Well, it is not a pussycat, but with a max grain of 200, it is manageable. I do not find it as bad as a Night Guard .357 model. But, that is just me.

Lots of great representations of the many barrel lengths and configurations are displayed on this thread... I believe most would agree the production of the L frame guns was one of the wisest decisions made by S&W..
Pictured are a 4" and a 6" 686 no-dash. They are both first month of production guns and the model platform from which all 686 guns evolved. These two remain NIB and I'm the original owner.

well I would imagine that would come down to the grips too, I have a set on a 49 bodyguard that look just like that when it comes to the shape of the grip made by precision grip specialties and it makes all the difference in the world shooting that little J frame.
still nonetheless its an interesting little piece, and its kind of funny when you think about it, it seems like the ideal frame for making a 357 magnum sized bodyguard would be the L frame just like that, not these J frames their selling that are ammo sensitive.

I have a couple of nice 4" 686 no dash models. One is my shooter, the other a LNIB safe queen. Looking for a nice 4" 586 no dash to add to my collection.
4" 686 No Dash..."The Shooter"
LNIB 4" 686 No Dash..."The Safe Queen"

Here is my 4" 686-3. The stocks are Kurac's (claro walnut) and the prop rod is all thanks to bbtrout.
Two must haves for any S&W collector...

I had to look through twice to make sure; not a single 619 or 620 to be seen, my very favorite L-Frames, and now hard to find. The -81/-86s are great L-Frames, maybe the best, but I love that old K-frame Model 65/66 look of the 619/620. I'm stuck on K-frames (the 547, 13, 64 and 65 in particular) these days and for me nothing beats that old 4" HB Model 10 look, balance and feel.
So here's a 619, skeeter can jump in with his 620 (or anyone else for that matter). I re-gripped it with Ahrends, just wish S&W had made them in square butts, but I'm not complaining. I'll never get rid of this 619, of all the .357s I've ever owned, this one "feels" the best, and shoots unbelievable groups. That 620 shoots even better with those adjustable sights.

Lots of sweet L-frames! Here's my stable - 2.5" 686-1, 586ND, 686ND, 581ND. The 4" ex state patrol 686 is my best double action shooter. Ya, I favor FG combats, too.

My Bedside Gun...
Here's my favorite "L"...
A 686M that I round butted many years ago...
I slicked the DA trigger, and added Mepro Nite Sites...
... fore...
... and aft.
Loaded with Fed-Spec Lo-Flash / Lo-Penetration 110 grain Magnums, it does yeoman duty as my last ditch house gun.

Since this thread was re-started, I had to look back and see what was on it. Well, I saw my post from January, 2012. Two L frames, a M586 and a M296ti. Sad to say the M296ti has found a new home. But, I also mentioned that I would like to have a M581 nickel. I still have the M586 and now I have the M581. I do have the original grips for the M581, but put the targets on for the picture.

Where did you fin an aftermarket 2-1/2" barrel? I have a 581 that is getting boxed up next week and sent to a smith for round butting and cutting the barrel to 3". If there is an available replacement barrel I may go that route.

My 686-6. A youngster in this L crowd. Would like an older pre-lock brother named 586 some day...

I have four - from left to right and top to bottom, they are a 6" 686-4 PowerPort, a 6" 686-0(M) w/TT & TH, a 4" 686-3 w/TT & TH and a 6" 686-3 Classic Hunter.
I've never fired the PowerPort or the Classic Hunter. I suppose I should but since they were unfired when I bought them and neither is made any longer, I just can't bring myself to do it.

A 681 PC is hardly anything to be "sorry" about (LOL). I have your gun's cousin, the same model treated to a two-tone Birdsong finish of green and black. Ugly as sin but it shoots OK. Now I'm sorry as I have no picture of it.
Pictures I do have are of a couple of Brazilian 38 Specials:
A CS-1 pawn shop find:
And this odd-ball. A 586-7 done up by the Custom Shop in the style of the guns Smith produced for the French anti-terrorist police:
Supposedly there are only 92 of these so collectors, don't read any further...I shoot this one occasionally. (smile)
