Converting a 686 to a 686+ or a 6 shot 617 to a 10 shot.
I am wondering about changing my existing model 686 to a 686+ with a 7 round cylinder. What would I need? Just the new cylinder, or a new hand and other components? Same question regarding converting a 6 round M617 to a 10 round model.
Thanks.

I don't think you can make your 6-shot 686 into a 7-shooter because the boreline-to-chamber dimension is larger on the 7-shot version. In other words, the cylinder will not line up correctly.
The 617 conversion would probably work with a 10-shot cylinder and hand installation.

I just popped the 7-shot cylinder from my 686+ into my 686 and it timed fine with no other change. However the 6-shot cylinder into the 686+ timed ok first few pulls but then would stick and not fire.

The 686 cylinders interchange with no problem, but the timing will have to be checked. You may need a hand or some work on the star, but it varies from gun to gun.

It's the luck of the draw, but it's always worthwhile to check the timing, esp on a CCW.....
