Question on Square Butt J-frame Target Stocks
Got my second square butt J-frame yesterday ...... a 4" Model 63... .22lr
It came with the small Maga or "splinter" stocks......... I'd like something more for this "Kit Gun".......
In my "Big Box-O Grips" I found a nice set of J-frame Target grips.......which cover the lower half of the backstrap but leaves the top half exposed.
Couldn't find an answer to my question in the SCS&W 4th ED...........
My question is; were/are there factory Sq butt J-frame target grips that leave the entire backstrap exposed like the K,L and N frame Target grips?????

No, unless you count rubber stocks . Plenty of nice aftermarket wood alternatives that do not cover the backstrap.

Too you young guys or those new to collecting/accumulating S&Ws........
Never throw anything away..... or add extra stuff/accessories to "trades" that don't get you your money back.
Going through my "Big Boxes-O-Stuff"........ I found a Hogue J-frame Square Butt ( smooth/single finger grove) Goncalo Alves wood grip; and a Bianchi 5BH lined "Kit Gun" holster for the 4inch J-frame.....
To replace these today would cost me about $180 +shipping ...... would guess I've got less than half those $$s in these.

Hi, BAM-BAM! I have the identical SB target grips that you describe. Have you tried them at all? There's very little wood thickness covering the bottom half backstrap of the grip. Just a thought.
BTW, You're correct. NEVER throw anything out that's firearms-related. At my former range, I found several lightly-used IWB suede clip pouches for my J-frames in the "junk/$1" box. Also some grips, wood and rubber, and plastic loaders for hi-cap 9mm pistol mags. Happy holidays!

Have the same Model 63 - 4". Found the target grips (NOS) on ebay. Paid $45 for them - a bargain. Only cover half the backstrap. The target grips really makes this revolver an accurate target shooter.

No there aren't any factory targets for sq butts w/o the wood on the bottom half of the backstrap.
I also find the factory J frame targets very good except for the extra wood at the bottom of the backstrap. They position the hand well for hip shooting, but that's not how I shoot my kit guns.
I just remove the extra wood and it's simpler on the smooth targets:
But I don't prefer the smooth targets, so I have to do a little restoration of the checkering border when I remove the wood. I also take a little length off the bottom:
A non-factory target model, my homemade .32 'Kit Gun', 4" J frame Model 30-1 with modified targets:
Top gun, my .22/32 Kit Gun also with modified targets, with more checkering left:
