The amazing 500 magnum.
I finally got out to the range today to shoot my 500 with 8 3/8 barrel. And my review is that this pistol is AMAZING. I cant believe that a pistol with such a huge cartridge is so refined. I love S&W don't get me wrong I'm a fan with several to my name including a sigma .40ve, pre model 10 .38 special, model 29 collectors edition, M&P 40c, and now the big boy 500 mag. All of these weapons are just great and I love them all but this new 500 is my new favorite. I reloaded ammunition even before I ever shot it crazy huh! Well I wish there was a particular room on this website dedicated for this great pistol. I am just in awe at how well thought out this pistol was. Just wanted to say thank you to S&W for another great product and I hope to continue to collect many more old and new and I'm sure i wont be disappointing.

Congrats on your new 500. I have had my 8 3/8" 500 for 8 years now. Liked it so much I purchased the big Performance Center Hunter. Plus, waiting patiently for delivery of the new Big Horn Armory Model 89 carbine lever action.

Good for you! I've never owned or shot a .500 S&W. I've always found the .44 S&W Magnum to be about all I could handle accurately. I can see where the larger revolver would be much more suited to hunting heavy game, etc. under field condition. Handloading for it will allow you to tailor your ammunition to your own needs at the range and in the field. Enjoy!

Glad you have a smile on your face. They're great guns, more accurate than 99% of those who use them.
Power levels from minimum where it's significantly more powerful than any 45ACP to wild where no legitimate handgun round compares.
Nothing it can't do well except CCW. Don

Yes fellas it was extremely accurate and kicked about as hard as my .44 mag. I live in Louisiana and I have a degenerative disease of my nerve endings in my neck from and injury in 2009. As weird as it may seem Ive had to get rid of most of my high powered rifles because the recoil does terrible damage to my shoulders and neck. I have always loved shooting high powered cartridges and have had several Wetherby rifles, So I like magnum loadings. Well believe it or not I have switched from high powered rifles to handguns because for the only reason I can see is that my elbows, wrists and biceps absorb most of the recoil. So it was a a blessing to learn that I didn't have to give up my love of all powerful guns. The 500 was just the moral booster I needed to help me get back up on the horse. I started with a .357 then .44 now the 500. And now I almost strictly hunt with just pistols. Its challenging and the thrill of having to stalk your prey and get in close to get just the right shot to put the animal down humanly is like nothing I ever experienced hunting with a rifle. It has brought new life back to hunting I thought I was going to loose forever.

Good to hear that the .500 looks like it will be a favorite of yours. Get serious about reloading, brings out the best in the cartridge/gun. Don

You probably started off right reloading for it.
Factory Big Bore ammo is WAY to Expensive.
You can also tailor your ammo to your needs. Since you are probably not shooting Cape Buffalo with it, you can turn the 500 S&W down to way more pleasant to shoot loads, and have plenty of power to spare for deer.
I have a pair of 480 Ruger Super RedHawks. I have never fired a factory loaded round through either of them. I load Hunting ammo a couple hundred fps below maximum. I also have a plinking load with a 400 grain lead bullet with 10 or 11 grains of Unique under it. And even a shotshell loading.
I filled my Antlerless, and Any Deer Tags last season with a full grown Doe, and an 11 point Buck. Those big bullets do the trick. I never pack my rifle's in the woods anymore deer hunting.
For Glass I recommend a 30mm UltraDot. Check them out at http://ultradotwest.com/

Well that is interesting. I had never heard of Underwood.
Appears to get very good reviews.
That 500 magnum ammo is remarkably cheap.

www.underwoodammo.com/
Seems to be down right now but was fine earlier today.
The 500 mag ammo was like 28 bucks for a box of 20.
Cheapest I've ever seen
