Good-bye IL!
Removed the ILs from my 642 and M&P 327 today.
Easier than I thought.
I love S&W but what a stupid thing to put in a device that you rely upon for your life.

Sounds like a good idea. Did you just take off the grips and side plate on the 642 and remove the parts? Any tips? If it's something I can accomplish on the kitchen table, I may do the same.

Yes. take off the grips. Remove the cylinder. Remove the side plate. Remover the spring. Remover the trigger. On the 642 removing the trigger was a little tricky but got it out. Remove the bolt. The IL is then exposed. I removed the flag and reassembled the guns. No more IL.
The only other tricky part is with the 327, when I removed the bolt the spring pops out a small pin and it took awhile to find it. When you remove the bolt be extra careful and watch the pin.
There are some youtube videos that show the disassembly. I watched them a few times prior to doing this.
For the 642 I needed a paperclip to remove the spring.

I have an Australian PD trade-in 66-7 that came with the nub on the flag ground off. Clean job, doesn't leave any gaps or holes where there were lock parts, and there is NO way that lock will ever work. Even with the flag up, the gun still fires.

WEll maybe, and even if so, things have changes drastically since then. They are also selling a pile of guns without IL, including revolvers. So, why are they still there ?

Yep, I took the 1st step, disabling my 642 from the inside. The rest of lock mechanism is still there until I can get some change together and order a plug from John.
I really didn't expect any problems, but it doesn't hurt to remove it and it's just another thing not to worry about.

You don't have to remove the cylinder or the trigger.
Just the main hammer spring and hammer. Then the flag is there.

Right, I mis-wrote. No need to remove the trigger. I meant hammer. But you also need to remove the bolt after removing the hammer, the lock is under the bolt.
I removed the cylinder because I think it makes it easier to get the plate off.
I just removed the flag and left the part that is in the hole be. Even though the sight of the Hillary hole bothers me, just knowing that it is inoperative is enough. So, I probably won't get a plug.
I just don't get the idea of the internal lock. I have tons of trigger locks for when I need to secure my guns. Indeed, Massachusetts requires that I lock my guns when not under my control and Massachusetts doesn't recognize the internal lock as a sufficient gun lock! So I have to put a trigger lock on anyway.
