Default Just picked up a 4" 586 no dash, what do you guys think of them??

The gun I picked up is in pretty nice shape and very tight. It was made in 1982 acccording to S&W. The gun balances very well in the hand. The bore is very clean and the lock work is now properly oiled and working smoothly. This is my first experience with this model so i'm interested what you 4" L frame users think of them. Any ideas on some nice slim Roper Style wood grips for it? Thanks for any opinions guys!!

A solid, well balanced platform for the .357. Great revolver.

I like mine very much. It's a nice robust Magnum Revolver, arguably the best non- P&R S&W made. Put whatever grips you like on it, it's your gun.

Congrats on a great revolver! I love mine with its 4" barrel and nickel finish. It's my most accurate centerfire. I've tried many different grips on it and finally settled with some Herretts that fit my hand very well. Robbtt has some for sale in the accessories classified section. I paid about the same for mine a few years back. I also refinished them in a darker shade that really looks cool with the nickel.

Should be a great revolver! I have a 6" version and as many have said, they are very accurate and reliable. I don't know why, but the blued steel action just seems 'smoother' than the comparable stainless steel 686/681s I have. Put a nice set of attractive wood grips on it if it doesn't already have them...it is totally necessary on a fine blued steel handgun! I have Ahrends and factory smooth ones for mine.

Congrats on your purchase of a S&W 586 L-Frame 4" no dash.
Perfectly balanced and a great shooter with .38 or .357magnum rds.

I purchased my S&W 586 L-Frame 4"(No Dash) new back in December of 1981. I've shot thousands of rounds with it back in the old days of Postal Matches with .38cal 148gr HBWC's. Action is smooth as silk now. It's still one of my favorite handguns. Currently shooting 158gr SWC and 125gr JHP's. Still looks decent after all these years and still a great shooter.

Enjoy!

I have 4" 586, 16-4 and 17-6. They make a great trio, not as good as the k-22, k-32, k-38 trio but still quite nice. I really like the balance of the 4" full lug. I had a 6" 17-6 but sold it as I found it too front heavy for me, but it was a good gun. I have a 6" 586 that I got for a steal that shoots great but still to me doesn't balance as well as a 6" 19.

I don't shoot a lot of .357 Magnum ammunition, but if I did, the 4-inch 586 would be very high on my list of choices - maybe at the top. They are great revolvers - I always thought quite a bargain considering the similarities to the Python, and the price differential.

I admire Pythons, but if I am talking about a "using gun," I would much prefer the S&W, so the more attractive price was always just icing on the cake, to me.

If you really like thin stocks, you might try Hogues in some fancy wood that appeals to you. They are too thin for me, and I do not like finger-grooves in general, but they definitely qualify in the "thin" area and the workmanship is always very good. Good luck with your search. I think you will be very happy with your new revolver.

The 586 is a great gun. You may or may not be aware of a recall S&W did on no-dash and dash-1 guns. I had it done to mine but I have known guys who never got the mod and never had a problem with them in spite of shooting several thousands of rounds through them. This is the S&W letter they put out regarding these guns:

"SMITH & WESSON
MODEL 581, 586, 681, 686, or 581-1,
586-1, 681-1, 686-1 & 686CS-1, REVOLVERS

RECALL: Reports have been received from the field where the combination of a SMITH & WESSON L-FRAME 357 MAGNUM REVOLVER and some .357 Magnum ammunition has resulted in unacceptable cylinder binding. L-frame revolvers bearing model numbers:

581, 586, 681, 686, or 581-1, 586-1,
681-1, 686-1, 686CS-1

Cylinder binding can cause a failure to fire. Mishandling a revolver while freeing the cylinder can result in accidental discharge.

Cylinder binding can result from a number of causes, including characteristics of an individual revolver or the use of ammunition, which does not conform to industry pressure specifications or is particularly fast burning. Recent developments in ammunition manufacture emphasize the production of .357 Magnum ammunition with increased velocity and greater primer sensitivity.

Although there have been very few reported incidents of cylinder binding, in view of our concern for our customer's safety and the reliability of Smith & Wesson products in all circumstances, we issue the following warning:

In a situation where a failure to fire can be critical - such as law enforcement or personal protection - do not use .357 Magnum ammunition with an L-frame revolver bearing model numbers 581, 586, 681, 686 or 581-1, 586-1, 681-1, 686-1, 686CS-1 without an "M" over the model number until you have had the revolver modified.

Those who need to use their L-frame revolver under these conditions prior to modification can safely fire .38 Special caliber ammunition.

Smith & Wesson has developed a modification to improve existing L-frame revolvers. This improvement enables them to fire all .357 Magnum ammunition, without cylinder binding. Shipments of L-frame revolvers from our factory after August 21, 1987 already include this improvement.

You can check if your revolver includes this improvement by looking at the left side of the frame when the cylinder is fully open. If your revolver has been stamped either with a "2" or higher number after the basic three-digit model number or with an "M" above the model number, your revolver includes this improvement and does not need modification. If your revolver bears the model number 581, 586, 681, 686, or 581-1, 586-1, 681-1, 686-1, 686CS-1 without an "M" over the model number, it does not include this improvement and your should have your revolver modified.

Smith & Wesson will modify your L-frame revolver free of charge to eliminate the possibility of cylinder binding with .357 Magnum ammunition. Law enforcement agencies wishing to arrange for modification of L-frame revolvers should call 800-458-8469 between 9 A.M. and 6 P.M. Eastern time (MA residents call 413-734-8244). Other users should send their revolvers to a Smith & Wesson Warranty Service Center, specifying "L-frame improvement program" and enclosing their name and return address.

One of the modifications to improve the L-frame revolver is the installation of a new hammer nose. This obsoletes all old L-frame hammer noses (part numbers 4702 and 7513) and all old L-frame hammer assemblies (part numbers 3366, 3378, 3380, 3382, 3391, 4722, 4723, 4726 and 4728) in field parts inventories. Superseded parts should never be fitted into a modified revolver as this may result in malfunction. It is essential for safety that you return these obsolete L-frame hammer noses and obsolete L-frame hammer assemblies for a free exchange to:

Smith & Wesson
Service Department
2100 Roosevelt Avenue
Springfield, MA 01101

Do not return L-frame hammer-nose bushings from your spare parts inventory inasmuch as they are useable in J, N and K-frame revolvers, which are not included in this Product Warning.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Smith & Wesson's first concern is the safety of its products and the protection of its customers.

texagun,
Thanks for the information! I just called S&W and they are forewarding a free mailing label for me to send in the 586 for needed "mods". Can't beat that for service!! I also mentioned that some less informed person had tried to tighten the ejector rod without some leather in the pliers jaws and had ruined the knurling and he said that that would be taken care of also, other wise the gun is about 95% except it does not have the origional grips. Thanks for all your replys guys, they are appreciated. I want to build some 158 grain SWC cast bullet loads for this gun when I get it back. I appreciate hearing from you guys!!
