I wouldn't , but that's me .
The time to ask that question is BEFORE the purchase .
Your intent of use should dictate what condition of weapon you buy .
IMO .

Good point. I wanted a nice example but I also wanted to shoot it. But this one is really nice.
I guess you can look at it this way. If you go to the LGS and buy a new revolver you probably are going to shoot it. This is a new gun and I probably am going to shoot it.

I absolutely would shoot it. We get too balled up over the collector business, and this gun won't be in that status for a long time. It's a great gun, probably the best size for the .357, balances beautifully, I'd bet a paycheck is wonderfully accurate, and you can't wear it out.
Life's too short...shoot it, take care of it, then look at it (and then shoot it some more). You'll enjoy it much more this way.

Take it out, shoot it and enjoy it now. Enjoy it today as you can not take it with you when your time on earth ends.

That is beautiful, and I'm with hogster...I'd stare at it for a while and then shoot it. A lot. But a couple of years ago I bought a new-in-box 1911 government model from 1951 that had never been fired and I shoot that one every week. So take my opinion for what its worth.

I recently bought a 586 no dash that had less then 50 rounds through it. It's a shooter. I didn't buy it to sit in the safe.

I've wanted a 586 for years. I just haven't found a "good" one yet. They are either too nice and expensive or beat up. I shoot everything I own, I would shoot it, if it were mine.
Best, Rick

M41 is the owner that I purchased this beautiful 586 from. Thanks for a smooth transaction and kudos to you for keeping the 586 so pristine.

I bought a new car once. It smelled so new and looked so good, I swore I would never eat in it.
Then one day I was starving and passed by the golden arches. That day I dropped the first of many french fries between the seats.
I still take care of the car but now I can "live" in it without worry.
Eat french fries and shoot the 586.

Nice Nice Nice !
Step One : Insert cartridges,
Step Two : Pull trigger repeatedly until you hear a "Click".
Step Three: Remove empty cartridges and repeat above steps.
When finished,
Step Four: Get Model 17-6 to match Model 586,

I would definitely shoot it. I shoot all my revolvers and autos, just not as much as I would like. I won a 586-4 with a three-inch barrel and she gets a workout on a regular basis

The pics show faint turn lines on the cylinder......
It is now not a 'perfect' gun.....
This model is so well balanced and feels great
and balanced in your hand.
SHOOT IT----ENJOY IT
I bought over a dozen new guns after 9/11
that I just 'kept', new and unfired, looked at them
and enjoyed myself.........
Started firing them last year.......I now enjoy
them much more than I did !!!

I have to add this [babble]
I am huge into .32 H&R magnum after allowing
it to slip by me for so many years.
I have been a fanatic of .357 since at least 1973
but this .32 is soooo sweet.....and powerful
without the recoil......I am intrigued with it !!
I am now building my 'collection' of arms in that
direction [.32] but slowly since I am retired and the
gun funds aren't what they were.
I want a Ruger Single-Six chambered .32H&R and
the only availability seems to be a John Wayne
commemorative. I am a JW fan....love the gun...
but the price is steep [sort of]. It is also a 'collector'
model in it's own right.
My wife asked 'if you get that, would you shoot it, it is very nice...?'
My reply....'If John Wayne walked in my office, saw it laying
on my desk, he probably would say--nice gun pilgrim, how does it shoot?--'
If you have enough $$$$$$$ to buy collector type guns to keep and not shoot, you probably aren't really foolin' around with $1000 guns to start with....not these days and times.
If you have 'duplicate' guns, that's different.
If it's really nice, if it feels really good to hold, go shoot the beans out of it !!!!!
Life is short......enjoy it.

Shoot it. It won't be worth any less when your grandson sells it at his garage sale to get money for new golf clubs in another 30 or so years than if it was still LNIB. :-)

I bought a few model 19 S&W's which I also felt were too nice to shoot.
One was unfired since leaving factory.
They sat in my safe taking up room and available funds for other purchases, so I sold them.
I won't buy any more guns just to have them sit in the safe.
I plan to only buy guns I plan to use. Well, that's the plan

Unless I really planned on selling it as LNIB in the near future, I'd shoot it. In the distant future, the price on "excellent in box" vs "PROBABLY" NIB is probably not much if any so why not enjoy it now?
BUT the real question is what will bring YOU the most pleasure with it? If it makes you happy to keep that one pristine, there are plenty of other great shooter L-frames that you can shoot the **** out of!

That is one sweet looking revolver. Shoot it, clean it, and enjoy it.
These L frame revolvers will last forever if you take of them.

Solved the dilemma today. Bought a Model 686 shooter and will put the Model 586 in the safe at least for a while. The 686 is from the same time period early 83 with 4" barrel. Comes with pachs on it but has the target grips included and the box and papers. Now I can sling some lead and not worry about messing up the safe queen

Are you talking about the safe queen or the shooter? You can get a pretty good idea by checking GB prices on the items that actually sell.

It's not rare, and you'll grow old waiting for it appreciate in value. If you take care of it, it will still have value, and you can enjoy it. It will never be as valuable to a collector/buyer as it will be to you.

No disrespect intended, but there isn't a Smith I own I wouldn't shoot. Colts, that's a different matter altogether.
