Default 651 no dash 4"

I found a 651 no dash 4" today at an estate sale. Very clean gun that does not appear to have been shot much. It is a 1983 gun according to the serial #. I need to replace the chipped rear sight blade and the non original grips. Cleaned up very nice. Any info about the 651 is greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of pics of the 651 and it's cousin, a model 63. I don't know what make of grips are on the 651 but plan on buying some SB magnas. It needs that original look. Just might find a nice set at the gun show in Louisville this coming weekend.

Default Model 651 Info

Here is my Model 651 I bought when they first came out. I ordered it with both cylinders in 1983. My particular gun has an "R" prefix, something only the first 902 Model 651's had. If your gun has that prefix it would definately make it a little more scare than the standard three letter prefix guns. My Model 651 also came in a two piece Bangor Punta blue box, and had Bangor Punta marked paperwork which is pictured behind my gun. I also have the first factory introduction paperwork, which actually shows a 4" Model 63 which has a pinned barrel, which no Model 651 has. The gun would have come with standard checkered Walnut service grips. I put mine away, and put smooth factory Rosewood grips on it to make it look better. Hope that helps.

Default NICE find!!

Mine is a -1 model, with round butt frame from the 2nd production run of 1991-1998. Came in the one piece box, with rubber grips, but DID also have an aux .22 LR cylinder from the Factory.

Hate the rubber grips...why it wears a set of old diamond center wood grips.

IF you shoot yours...DO take ear protection. They are... LOUD!!

That is a very very nice gun you have there Model39. I have been doing a little research on mine since I got it Friday. It is the 3 letter prefix. A 22 magnum has been on my short list for some time now. I called the guy that I bought if from yesterday, and asked, if by chance there was an extra cylinder for a 22lr laying around. He didn't think so but would call if one was found. I will be looking for checkered sevice grips instead of magnas. Thanks for the info.

You are quite welcome. I always like to share what little I know, much in the way others have helped me. Below is a picture I have posted before of both my Model 651's. I got the 2" Model 651 when they first came out, and again ordered the extra 22LR cylinder for it, so I have a set of both barrel lengths S&W offered in the Model 651. I also have a dual cylinder Model 650 to finish off the "J" frame 22mag/22LR revolvers that were made/ offered by the factory..

I found this ANIB last fall at a lgs - a longtime desire finally satiated. The .22 LR speedloader didn't fit Magnums, of course - and mine was .22 WMR-only - ~99 vintage. With s/t, ie, OTD, it was $579 - my tire money (PRIORITIES!!). Phun gun of the first order... but loud and 'phlashy', too.

I have since changed the -1's stock rubber grips for wood (RB J-frame, so '60 Pro' grips from S&W fit perfectly!) - found some HKS #51 speedloaders - and bought some ammo:

The Remingtons group was the largest by far - the CCI MaxiMags, HP or not, and the Hornady 'Critical Defense' both grouped far better. The CCI's are cheapest - $9/50 at WallyWorld, where the Remi's are $15/50. The Hornadys are harder to find locally but run ~$14-$15/50 where available. The speedloaders came from - of all places - Amazon - new!

I don't know what it's good for... but it is sure 'phun'! Congratulations!

I took the 651 to the range yesterday on a test run after having a new sight blade installed. The only issue was 4 or 5 misfires in about 50 rounds. I was shooting CCI, Winchester X, and Winchester Dynatip, all from Wallyworld. No misfire with the dumbed down Dynatip. What could be the problem? Never had any misfires with my newer model 63 with about 300 rounds thru it.

Not the correct grips but very nice ones that I bought from a fellow forum member, -db-. Frist I put some targets on but I do like the diamond grips better.

I was lucky enough to find this 650 with both cylinders and box about two weeks ago, to keep the 651 company. They are fun and loud at the range. I had been looking for a 22 Mag for a while, and by chance found both Kit guns.

I think those are Eagle grips. They should be stamped inside with the name and probably also say "Made in India".

I took another look at the grips, and you are right. They are marked, the best I can make out, SJSP AJB India. Put them away with the other grips I have accumulated. Thanks for the info.
