Been looking for a project gun...
And Bud's is always dragging me back kicking and screaming...
So I figured one of the Model 10's would make for a brilliant candidate. They were made by the truck load, they aren't rare what so ever, and I'm always wanting to tinker...
Soooooooo....
Model 10-10:
Is this a good candidate for some do it yourself with the polishing down the little nicks and dings, smoothing out the back of the grip frame, and then finally some Brownells Oxpho????
I want to do it so bad, but then again, it's not like I think she's ugly right now. I have just been wanting a project gun to have some fun at refinishing and seeing how new I could make her look again. It's not like I wouldn't shoot her either way I go.

I'd just put on a slightly better set of stocks and put that gal to work.

You may never get your money back out of it, but the learning experience will be more than worth it.

I'm not talking plating... Although a hard chromed gun will be in my future. Maybe that 28-2 that's still on lay away...
I'm talking polishing down the steel uniform again and then rebluing her with Oxpho bluing cream. I have used it on small bits and parts but never to reblue a whole gun.

G96 makes a Paste Blue that works pretty well. I've never had much luck with liquid bluing formulas but the G96 Past gave the guns I've touched up and refinished a nice blue/black finish. If you can get it glass bead blasted before you blue it you'll end up with a nice matte finish.

I'd mount a pair of clean stocks, a BK adaptor and shoot the hell out of it...

Looks good. I was going to say, if you didn't want to re-blue it you could just take a piece of 4 Ought Steel Wool(it's nonabrasive so it won't remove the finish, just smooth it up) and some oil and buff it up, that'd give it a nice browned finish, just like the old time flintlock rifles.

If I was really driven to pretty it up, I'd smooth up the exterior as best I could, find a nice set of grips your hands really like, and look into Cerra-Kote-ing it yourself in your favorite shade.

Why don't you just dip it in whip cream and call her Sally.
What you've done so far looks good, keep up the quality tinkering.

The back of the grip frame was super easy to get back to bare metal and polish down. I'm trying to use a wood block with some super fine grit to get some of the frame cleaned up at least to lose the worst of the dents and dings. The barrel is a bigger challenge than I thought... (duh...) I'm trying a sanding sponge on it so the sponge conforms to the barrels curves and doesn't wear down dips and new curves. I can really see why pro's charge as much as they do for this kind of service.
And if I really do just fudge it all up and can't get it to match then I have already found a place in town that will bead blast it just enough to rough it up and then Cerakote it. Or I could just strip the whole girl bare and use some of Brownell's bake on finish from the spray can. So many options... Maybe it will be time to hit up Buds again for another project gun before they all dry up...
