Default Are Lew Horton "Contoured Wood Grips" Different From the Factory N Combat Stocks?

***Update***

Purchased "Lew Horton" contoured factory stocks. See photo comparison on post #8 .

I would like to know the answer before I go any further in searching for a "correct" set for my three-inch 29-3 Lew Horton (ALB6XXX).

I saw a pair advertised as "Lew Horton Contoured Grips". It looks identical to the combat stocks, but the description says that it is longer and thicker than the "regular N-Frame combat stocks".

Hoping to get some input from the experts. Thanks in advance.

not sure about the grips, but you can email Lew Horton to find out if your 29 is a LH gun. Just give them the serial #. I inquired last Friday and had a reply on Monday

The early Lew Horton Combat 3" revolvers (24-3, 624, 629-1 and 29-3) all were fitted with the same version of combat stocks. That version has the speed loader cutout on the left side ONLY. Later combat stocks evolved to have identical cutouts on both sides. The combat stocks with cutouts on both sides would not be correct for your gun.

Thanks to all who replied up to this point.

I saw an item posted for bidding on another site where the set is advertised as a "Lew Horton" combat grips. It has the S&W medallions, and looks identical to what I am familiar with (factory combat grips), but is a little wider and longer at the bottom.

Thank you Jughed. I actually gave them a call, and a nice gentleman named "Bobby" gave me not only a confirmation that my gun is a LH, but also some of its history. He doesn't have any information about stocks though.

Default Grips

It is my understanding that LH guns came with the same combats that the other Smith and Wessons of the period came with....nothing special back then and nothing special now...except for the fact that factory N frame RB combats in any style are in short supply.

The "longer and thicker" part may be a reference to the newer style combats that came on the DX models and others...more flat sided than round and just a hair longer.

You can see the subtle differences from time to time in my pics below. The first pic shows a set in the top left that would have been close to what your LH may have come with.

I purchased the thicker pair, and installed it on the 29-3.

Here are the comparison photos:

Yes, mine are a later version but as correct as I could find and afford. It is truly amazing the price they command. And to think, no one wanted them in the early 80's.

1mathom1, not to hijack the thread, but what do these sell for now? I have a set of original RB combats off of a 3" 29-3 that do not fit my hand and am considering selling them and getting some that fit me. Thanks in advance.

I paid $115 about a year ago. I see nicely figured ones going for about $160...sometimes more.
