Don't know about others but I've NEVER had a S&W handgun that failed to fire. I must be lucky I guess.

I've got old and new Smiths--34,36,49,442,642,632,10,15,327pc, 327ng--and Colts--Police Positive, D Special (3), Cobra, Agent, Trooper MK III (3). The only 2 with any serious QC issues were made in the 60's and 70's--a 34 2" and a D Special both with clocked barrels. No problems with the new ones, though the old ones are a hell of a lot prettier.

Well, the original poster, 'treerat', just joined last month. He hasn't been back here since his starting this thread - guess he really was upset. I know S&W has produced the odd misaligned barrel - we hear about it here. My oldest is from '96, with the rest from '99 or later, while the majority of my twenty-odd S&W revolvers, all but three bought brand new, have the MIM parts & IL. One pinched extractor spring (696-1) and one with loose sideplate screws (6" 629-6.) separate my collection from utter perfection!

Im In the same boat. I just bought a 686 "special Talo edition" and the grips dont even fit the gun. customer service was less than sympathetic. Looking at getting a .22lr revolver its not going tobe a smith I tell you that much.

S&W has done right be me. I traded a Ruger Blackhawk for a S&W Pre-lock 686. When unloading the firearm, the cylinder came off of the crane. I called Smith up and since I bought it used, I had to send it in on my nickel. No problem.
Two days later, I got a phone call telling me what was wrong with the gun and how much it would cost. 2 weeks later, I got an E-mail telling me that the gun was on its way back to me. Their bill was very reasonable, it cost nothing! I called and asked if there was a snafu, and they said it was simply on the house. I was shocked. I still have the 686.

I bought an M&P 15R NIB from them. It's the one chambered in 5.45X39. It's been a persistent Jamm-o-matic. E-mailed them, got a tag, boxed up the gun, and UPS came to pick it up. 1.5 weeks later, it's back with a note stating that they polished the feed ramp and honed the chamber. It's going out to tonight to see if it still works or not.
ETA: Function test with the M&P 15 with 50 rounds through all 5 magazines was successful. No jams. Rifle is fixed. I am pleased.
Still, I gotta hand it to them. They've handled both issues I've had with pretty good care and grace.

David,

Thanks for the reply. It was refreshingly helpful.

The ejector star was fit tight to the cylinder so I assumed it must be as designed. I hope so, the boys at S&W are replacing my broken, two month old BG38 Bodyguard with a 642.

I hope (assume) I'll have better luck with this little gun than I did with the Bodyguard.

Over the years I've owned close to 100 S&Ws. More than some, less than others. Of those pistols, only a handful (>10%) were new, and I never had any significant troubles with them whatsoever. The older NL S&Ws have been flawless, and they range from a turn-of-the-century .38 to various state-of-the-art AirLites. Are S&W products perfect? No ... though S&W has the best warranty out there to remedy any problems that arise. Any issues that I have experienced have been addressed by the Factory in a timely and courteous fashion. I stand by the company and its product line, without hesitation.

Don't like S&Ws? Don't buy S&Ws ... but enough with the gratuitous whining. It's getting tiresome and cliched ...

I much prefer buying used when it comes to S&W revolvers (you are less likely to get a "lemon" than buying new, unfortunately). I will not own an internal lock model. All my revolvers are pre-2000, although I have been considering a no-lock Pro-Series 632. Some of the 1990's Performance Center models are of very high quality and I try to seek them out. The last "new" S&W I purchased was an inexpensive 2004 SW40VE and although I ended up selling it, it gave very good service despite it's cheap price and construction.

First, let me preface this by saying I've been drinking...

Next, I'm bored. Anywho...

Several thoughts come to mind, first: the Internet is relatively new. 20 years ago when someone bought a bad product, they did not have a source they could come to and readily profess their disgust. This leads to an overwhelming appearance of all companies showing a loss in quality over the past decade.

I've purchased 5 new firearms in the last 10 years from, Remington, beretta, Springfield, and smith and Wesson (total not each). I've had zero problems with any of them. I am a happy camper. I didn't come home and jump on the interwebs and profess how awesome they were. I didn't care.

But, when somene finds a lemon they want to vent. So, the likelihood that you see something wrong from a particular company is much more probable than you see someone who bought one from Cabelas, went to the range, and is singing happy happy songs.

Remember, thousands of firearms are being sold every day. From all across the country. If one dude comes on here and says their gun stinks, suddenly everyone cries foul.

My most recent purchase is an IL 60-14. I'm going to shoot the begeezus out of it, 1300 rounds and going strong. Best yet, if it fails while I'm pumping out lead, I have a lifetime waranty. Seriously, thats awesome. Ask ford or Chevy to do that for you.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I have always thought the purpose of inserting a loaded magazine into a gun with the slide locked back was to immediately chamber a round thus making the pistol ready to fire. If that was not the immediate goal, would it not make sense to insert a mag into a gun with a closed slide, or not insert a magazine at all???
Just throwing this out for thought.
I keep waiting for a warning saying "If the gun is loaded, the safey (in guns so equiped) is off and you pull the trigger, it will go BOOM."
I'm sorry, but anyone who actually has to read the idiot level instructions provided these days to be able to properly load and fire a weapon probably shouldn't even be near one, much less trying to load and fire one. Just sayin'.....

First off amigo I got to say that anyone who on their only 4th post is already drinking and pontificating like rburg is my kind of guy
Secondly, I agree with your post. I have bought a ____-load of guns in the past two years and I only had issues with one-a Ruger which I promptly sent back on their nickle and got returned in superlative condition. I'm good with that track record.

I guess the OP left the forum, no posts since the last one.

Maybe he's on the Taurus forum?
