642 Pro vs 642 Super Tuned Trigger Work
While doing research to purchase new J-Frame I have found conflicting info on what exactly is done to the 642 Pro trigger by the PC. I called S&W customer service twice with various questions. Once I was told by the CS rep that the 642 Pro trigger received no stoning or other work and the other CS rep stated that the PC hand stones and fits the trigger parts on all the Pro series models and that the 642 Pro receives this treatment.
I have narrowed down my decision to either the 642 Pro or the 642 Super Tuned which was a Davidson's exclusive (SKU 178025). I like the idea of the super tuned trigger work but I also would prefer the no lock feature of the 642 Pro.
So, can anyone tell exactly what if any trigger work does the 642 Pro receive from the PC? How does it compare to the super tuned package on the Davidson's exclusive. If they are close in spec & function I would definitely go with the Pro for the no lock feature.

Welcome to the forum!
I have the 642 Pro and, unless you are big on moonclips, would not recommend it over the 'ordinary' 642 no lock version which is available.
I've not tested a trigger on a 642 Super Tuned, but it's probably nicer plus I think you get the wood stocks (grips) which is also a nice touch.
So, not meaning to confuse you, but I think you have 4 to pick from:
'ordinary' 642 with the IL
'ordinary' 642 w/o the IL
642 Pro w/o the IL and cut for moonclips, and;
642 Super Tuned
Like I said, I have the 642 Pro. If I were doing it over, I'd get the 'ordinary' 642 w/o the IL. That's just me - I wouldn't keep the wood stocks on it as a CCW, so I wouldn't get the Super Tuned, and I've almost never used the moonclips.
Again, welcome to the forum.

Thanks Stuart. The moon clips really aren't important to me and if the trigger on the no lock is the same as the Pro, I would definitely chose the no lock. On the other hand if the Pro does receive some PC trigger work, I would prefer it.
Maybe I am making more of the lock than I should? If the lock was out of the equation, I would go with the super tuned.

First of all, welcome to the forum.
I can't tell any difference in the action/trigger of the Pro, compared to the "standard" I think the only thing done to those is they are cut for moon clips. But, the actions/triggers on the 642 "Super Tuned" are a noticeable improvement. (At least on the ones they were producing 5 years ago or so.) But, I generally don't buy S&W with the ILS, if the model in question is made without the ILS.

I WOULD PURCHASE THE 642-1 NO-LOCK. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE TRIGGER, SEND IT IN FOR TRIGGER WORK. I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH A DAO J FRAME TRIGGER PULL CAN BE IMPROVED. I HAVE A 642-1, AND ITS FINE FOR TORSO SHOTS @ SD DISTANCES---WHICH IS WHY I CARRY IT. ITS NOT A TARGET GUN…….

Locks are personal preference. Companies have done what the laws required now you get to choose. I looked at the same options years back and decided to just pick up what was available (lock version) and see how it went. Somewhere around 1500 (yes I counted and logged) dry fire cycles which would eventually include drawing, presentation and target engagement I did my mods. Apex Duty Carry kit $25. Opened it up cleaned inspected everything, noted where the wear marks were and got busy. Polished the rebound slide left and bottom with a very fine stone and using polishing compound and cotton swabs in the bore of the slide as well. Thorough cleaning and lube then reassembly and I am in J frame heaven. Went from 12.5# to 8# with a very smooth trigger that is still possible to accurately stage if I feel like it. Topped with a Hogue Monogrip and it is no longer tolerable to shoot it is actually fun. Even my 16 year old daughter enjoys shooting it. Sorry I cheated the PC folks of my business......ok maybe not.

I suggest the 642 Pro. You may fall in love with moon clips (I did), you may not -- but for an extra $30 you get the choice and the revolver works the same with or without them.
Added virtue (to me) is no lock.
If you don't like the stock trigger, get it tuned and then you have everything.

Buy the run of the mill 442 or 642 and install an Apex trigger kit that will cost you in the mid twenties. There is NO trigger job that can surpass it. It even has a longer firing pin to compensate for any possible light strikes. The difference is amazing, and will show up in your accuracy,

Thanks guys for the welcome and the suggestions. I decided I really wanted the no lock feature of the pro so I ordered a 642 Pro this morning from my LGS. Should be here early next week.
I did call S&W customer service and inquired about sending in the gun for the PC to do an action job on it. They said I could have the Master Revolver Action package performed on it but the cost is $165 + shipping. I'm not sure I want to invest that much on the tuning.
I'll look into the Apex kit...

I really like my 642 pro. The trigger started pretty rough, but seemed to smooth out considerably faster with a little dry firing than some other j frames I've had.

I picked up the 642 last night. I stopped at another local shop on my way home and they had an Apex J-Frame Duty/Carry Spring Kit in stock. The price installed was fair so I had them throw it on. The Apex kit is a MAJOR improvement and exactly what I was looking for. The trigger is smooth and pull is noticeably reduced compared to stock. Thank you everyone for the insight & advice.
Hope to make it to the range this weekend.
