Default N frame rear sight

I have a n frame rear sight assembly that is smooth with no grooves like the top of the barrel does, what is this for and is it wortb anything? Im thinking older n frame that has no ribbed sight plane

The model 28 came with a smooth rear sight, no grooves. I'm not sure on value. They do pop up on Ebay with regularity though.
