I carry a 640, but I'm looking for a little less weight for summer. Anyone have a good reason why I should get one over the other?

Both are Airweights, the 638 can be cocked, the 642 is available without the IL. Take your pick.

I would go with the 642 since you already have the 640. You can use the 640 for more frequent practice and belt carry (if you choose) and leave the 642 for pocket carry (or whenever you want to carry something lighter) with occasional practice. Put the same grips on both guns and you have two guns that are virtually identical, except for weight. Just my opinion, FWIW.

The 642 is very much like the 640 only lighter and of course 38 instead of 357. I have all three of the guns you mention and carry the 642 most of the time, just feels right!

642 (no lock) is a BUG at work, and primary summer carry. I have had it underwater when canoeing (no not on purpose) and carry it everywhere I go, even to church and on the mower. I can't think of a simpler, or easier to carry gun out there. I carry and shoot issued GD+P and it has never given me any trouble at all.

Heck, take your pick, they will both do the job. I actually ended up picking the 638 when I bought the first one because I liked having the option of getting the trigger cocked if I wanted to. Then I picked up a 640 cause it was a good deal, then I came across a M60Pro, had to buy that one too cause it was a good deal and I liked the looks of it..... then I saw the Colt version of the airweight, only with 6 shots instead of 5 so I bought that...... then there were a couple of model 36,s.. those were kewl so bought a couple of them.... thought I was done.... till a few weeks ago and noticed a beautiful M60-4 with a 3" barrel, always wanted a 3" barrel, I bought it. Now I think I really got enough of those J frames.... wrong!!! walked into my LGS Monday and see a new edition... a ported model 637 Pro... all black and purty, fit my hand like a glove and it shoots 357mag..... ok.... I'm done... it's going home with me

Buy whatever one you like... they all work!!
