Sweet gun! I love the exposed hammer; not so much because they can be shot single action, but because I like the look of the gun that way.
I didn't realize there are 3" barrel J-frames. This forum has been both enlightening and humbling. It makes me realize how much I have to learn about S&W revolvers. (I just ordered the SCSW.)

Got one when they first came out. Put S&W Goncalo Alves banana grips on it and have enjoyed it ever since.

Model 60-4 3-inch
One of my Grail guns! Nice find.
Unfortunately, you don't see them much in Kalifornia.

91,i did read a report some time ago, that confirms your post, not many of these were made before smith wesson moved on to different variations of the model 60 series.they are great at the range with reular 38 ammo, and shoot light +p ammo just fine.a lot of the platic and plymer 380 guns thta everyone is buying hold only 6 rounds.i would much rather have this and a 5 round speed srip.the gun is not as heavy as it looks.great for ankle ofr pocket carry

Carried my 60-4 today! I also put my first shots through a cherry 36-1 round butt today (another heavy-barrel 3" gun). The little 36-1 proved very well regulated, per usual for Smith fixed sight guns. And it was a powder puff to shoot with Remington 158 gr. SWCHP +Ps and Speer 135 gr. +P (short barrel). I enjoy these steel frame, 3" heavy barrel .38s!

There is a 2" model 60 Target as well, a limited run from the mid-1980s.

S&W Model 60
Nice little revolvers. Target hammer and trigger, too.
The grips are round to square style. To take advantage of the target hammer/trigger.

My brother has one of these. It's sweet. Looks like a mini 686.

m60-4
These are very nice little revolvers, I have big hands & these grips work best for me, not as attractive but fits my hand better.

I have a 60-10 and consider it to be the Swiss army knife of revolvers. Small and light enough to carry, accurate enough for range fun, and a versatile range of ammo from .38 shot shells to .357 magnum (painful!). Maybe the most underrated gun S&W makes.

Very, very nice indeed. My favorite S&W is a 3 in J-frame. I'll buy everytime I come across one if the deal is right. Really sweet shooting guns, enjoy.

Twomoons, another great find. The Model 60 is a benchmark revolver for S&W and the version you just bought is the pinnacle of development in 38 Special. I'd love to have this version in 327 Magnum, but they will never build them like this again unfortunately. Thanks for sharing.

This is a companion to my 696. We've hiked through a lot of desert together.
