Over the last 2.5 years I have purchased a S&W full size 1911, a 6 inch 629 and my wife just found me a Model 29 in 6.5 blue. All pistols operate without malfunction and are a pleasure to shoot.

Thumbs up

I just purchased A 386pd W/2.5 barrel it was used and I was unsure at first about these new style air weights but it shot wonderfully with .38s
and was a real handful with .357 158gr SJSP's but not brutal. Fit and finish seemed real good this is my first with an IL but will not be my last

Got my first Smith and Wesson and it's also my first revolver in May. A 642-1 without lock. I've been seriously considering concealed carry and this was highly recommended so was my choice. I've put about 250 rounds through it, some +p but mostly 158 gr standard storebought. I absolutely love this little gun! The more I handle it the more I like it. Quality of workmanship and finish on it right out of the box was perfect. It is so smooth that it slips in and out of a pocket or holster effortlessly. I put some nice walnut grips on it - just because I like wood - and now I like it even more. OK so it barks like a bulldog and kicks like a mule, but that's part of the charm of it. Only complaint is that it's a dirty little bugger. I'm amazed how dirty it is when I come home from the range. Is that a characteristic of all revolvers? Semi-autos don't seem to accumulate that much stuff. Seems to build up a lot of lead in the barrel so I'm going to try some FMJ to make it a little easier to clean. But - bottom line - I love this little gun. Recommended it highly to my son who will probably be buying one soon.

Glad your're having fun with your snub.

I used to buy American Eagle and that used to terribly foul my revolvers. I switched to PMC and it was a little better, I tried Atlanta Arms ammo in 357 and was much better.

I once owned a 908 and a 908S and regretted getting rid of them to fund some kind of ill-advised project with Fusion Firearms. Now I'm making up for it and just bought a 908S with three magazines at the LGS. Really nice pistol and I remember the rock-solid quality of it that made me buy one in the first place.

I have bought many guns since 2001 but only 3 "new" ones. 5" 1911, 4.25" 1911Sc and a PPK/S. All wonderful and performing great! They are kept right along side my older Smiths and I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything new from S&W.

I got a new 642 without the lock this week. Waiting on the Remora I ordered and have a Blackhawk pocket holster. Will be carrying 125 +P Golddots. Man I like this gun!

Got an M&P 15X about 3 years ago for a patrol rifle and love it. Last year I finally got my 1911e series w/ tac rail for a new duty pistol and about 6 months ago got a 2 1/2" 638 "J" frame bodygaurd for a BUG. Can't say enough about that. The extra 1/2" makes a lot of difference in sighting and ejection.

My latest purchase is a blued 4" pre-18 that handles like a dream.
I have been wanting a reliable 22 revolver since I bought my first S&W.
(A 681 with a buttery smooth trigger)
I have to say the gun surpassed my expectations.

Default New to me Smith's

this last year the have purchased 1 ea 642 with a Crimson Trace lazer, a 1980's model 14-4 w/6" barrel and just about three weeks ago I found LNIB 686 w/3" barrel. I did sell the 642 to small for my hands, The model 14 has a smooth trigger it's like glass. The 686 needed the trigger worked in a couple hundred rounds now its as crisp and smooth.I have had not problems with any of my smiths. I also have a model 60 w/ 3" barrel and a 4" 686 both great guns. The 4 " 686 did come missing the stirupp clip for the houge grip. contacted Houge they sent the part at no cost. It nice to be able to hear and say good thing about a company.

The other day I picked up a 4" 629 that came out of lay away at the local gun store, so who knows exactly how long it has been there. NICE GUN!!! The action is a little heavy but smooth. It shoots well. It is finished well. I rate it as a bit better than the 625PC I bought last year that was a little rough. The new grips that Smith used on the 629 do cover the back strap and were a little big for me, so I put a set of the rubber Hogue grips without the finger grooves, and the gun points great now.

In the hand, the 629 will feel very similar to the 625PC I compete with. Therefore, the 629 will remain mostly stock. I think it is big enough for home defense.

My most recent acquisitions are my 3913 and my 620, that I purchased just yesterday. So far I am quite pleased. Shot the 620 today and it is a keeper.

Default 2 GNU S&W's N DA HAUS

I've bought a Governor & an L-COMP, this year. Fit, Finish & Action, are great, and what I expect from S&W, given the price & reputation. I've got an M&P, R8 lost in the backorder labyrinth. Sum-day, sum-how, some-when!

Default New S&Ws . . .

In the past two months I have bought a 617-6" and a 686-4" Plus.

Love the 617; it shoots fantastic and am in the waiting period for the 686 (my shooting coach has several 686s and I often shoot the 6", 5" and 4" plus several 45ACPs including a sweet P220).

I also pick up a new Sig P220 Equinox next Monday! I really like the Sig auto as much as I like S&W revolvers. In fact, the P220 Equinox comes in a carry version and if I really like the 45 (which seems likely), I would consider getting a CCW and carrying the smaller Equinox - there're really beautiful and the P220s I've shot are all smooth and easy to re-target quickly with.

I'm also interested a S&W 38 Special and the 627 .357/38S, which I can see myself owning within the next few months.

Ahhh, cold blue/black/SS with great grips, smooth actions, and triggers that break like opera crystal from Bavaria . . . I'm so hooked!

New 686 4" two months ago. Perfect fit and finish. Lock up is tight and the cylinder/forcing cone gap was .0045" right out to the box, (best of all my revolvers including vaunted older pre-lock models). Have 400 rounds through it at the range and it is extremely accurate and comfortable to shoot. I'm a happy camper with the new S&W.

Picked up a 4 inch model 629-1 and a 2 1/2 inch 29-10 the other day. Both have the great finish that I have come to expect from S & W. My guns are tools that get a lot of use no safe queens here.

Bought a 686+P 5" and the gun is a nail driver at 25'. Love it. I have been waiting for a 460 S&W 14" since Aug. If my patience does not disappear. I also have a 629 6" Classic Hunter.

The other day I called my local firearm emporium and inquired if they had any model 27's indeed he had a 3.5 one but it just went on layaway, dang , but he said I have this really sweet model 28-2 like new with nice target stocks, box, paper and tool kit. Its in very excellent shape indeed. I know it will be a shooter for sure. Per the serial number its a 1967 DOB.

I got a 3" 3-5-7 686 version and it is great. Straight barrel, tight, perfect right out of the box. Heavy trigger but that was quickly fixed. And the lock flag had to go.

I purchased a new 617 and a new 686+ in October and I couldn't be happier with either one. The craftsmanship is every bit as good as my 14-3, 24-3, 27-2.

One thing I really like about the older guns are the case-hardened hammer & trigger but the MIM parts are perfectly functional.

The newest Smith I own is my Model 21-4, made in 2007. A beautiful very solid revolver. I really enjoy just having it - it has the look of the old .44 Spl revolvers, but it's stronger with a great trigger. I have a grip adapter on it, and I love the way it feels and handles.

VERY well finished...reminds me of several very old S&W's I have owned.

I was given a 642 a few years back and it has become one of my favorite guns and goes everywhere with me. I had a chance at a second one recently so now have a pair.

I haven't bought any brand-new S&W guns in years, but I did try my coworker's new Bodyguard380 last week. He loves it, and it has had no issues to-date. I liked it, too. It was accurate and reliable, and the integral laser was useful. The safety was impossible to activate unintentionally, although we would both prefer that this feature be made optional. Nice gun!

I purchased four brand new S&W N Frane Revolvers in the past two years.

1. S&W M57 in 41mag w/6" barrel in nickel
2. S&W M58 in 41mag w/4" barrel in nickel
3. S&W M29-10 in 44mag w/6 1/2" barrel in blue
4. S&W M24 in 44 special w/6 1/2" barrel in nickel

Lets not forget there are some awesome used S&W revolvers that need good homes too. Its nice owning the S&W revolvers of the past and the present times too.

Smile The Law Of Large Numbers and S&W Quality

One 686 went back for a timing issue and was fixed and returned in around 10 days. I say that's a good QC record, I would also say it's a large enough sample size to cast doubt for me on claims of people consistently getting bad guns from S&W.
Hi States: I'm really happy you are satisfied with S&W quality as many are including me, thought I'm a newbie. Your post got me to thinking so I thought I would share:

Following are some thoughts about others experiencing "bad guns from S&W." This goes to the heart of quality and what the good, the bad and the ugly look like to the consumer. I believe, except for a negligible number of customers, customers who report problems are to the best of their knowledge doing so out of genuine dissatisfaction with the product or service performing as advertised.

Given that assumption and the fact that I don't have any inside knowledge of S&W quality stats and further admit I haven't done any research that would pass peer review (lol); however, the anecdotal evidence is massive and back of the envelop calculations based upon sales and revenue suggest that production quality is worth being concerned about. I could easily see a 50-500K defects becoming potentially legitimate service/warranty issues over the past 10 years - how many were really reported, hmmm.

I'm not saying the above is so, but it's not hard to get to those numbers while being quite conservative in doing so. I'd bet that S&W is probably not a 6-Sigma company or close, and like most manufactures who do the warranty, quality, liability tradeoff they believe that good enough is just fine - BTW S&W has not been a financial star during this period. On the other hand, robust 6-Sigma companies seem to have margins, profits and satisfied customers that tend to ensure their long-term sustainability (S&W has been around a long time, but in the past few decades it has been a spotty financial performer).

Why is the quality discussion so important, because customers deeply appreciate the piece of mind and satisfaction that comes from owning/using high quality products. And for the record, first rate weapons are by-in-large moderately expensive and by their nature have failure modes that can be physically inconvenient to down right catastrophic.

That said, I really like the look, feel and action of S&W 686s, 617s and 629s. Will I buy another S&W? Yes, probably a 627 PC 357 sometime later this year, if I can find one. Would I go else where for the price point, or even 25-35% more, if there was a clear leader in quality for similar weapons . . . in a heart beat! And based upon casual comparisons including shooting, I did go else where when it came to a 45ACP. I bought a SIG P220 Equinox and shot S&W, Colt (2 models), Kimber and Sig side x side. There were two major reasons for my choice: 1) The fit/finish, feel and smoothness of the Sig, and 2) the potential to buy a higher quality firearm at a comparable price point. Admittedly, there is a high component of personal likes/dislikes here, but the two deciding factors were as stated.

I totally get the POV that people seem to complain a lot, and at the same time offer that limited personal experiences are often poor predictors of large population experiences in response to a given set of circumstances - Especially my own personal experiences as suitably large population predictors.

Take good care and enjoy your shooting,

Default I've bought three already this year.

I bought my first S&W in January, a 28-2 Highway Patrolman that I picked up in a consignment sale at my LGS. I loved it and pretty much stopped shooting anything else for the first month I had it. By then I was hooked on revolvers and S&W, so when I found out they made a special 4.25" 629 for the Canadian market (shorter barrels than that are prohibited here and require a special license that is almost impossible to get) in limited numbers I snatched one up. I loved that too, although I did replace the rubber grips for Hogues. I had sold my Glock22 about the same time with the idea of getting a Glock21, but they are out of stock pretty much everywhere, so I had some help from this forum and decided on an M&P45 which I just got a few days a go. I've only had it out once, but I know I am going to love it.

I think I should hold off on buying anything else for a while (I'm trying to stay clean for the rest of the year) and enjoy these ones, but I am liking the idea of the S&W 1911.

P.S. I even got a S&W T-shirt too.

Since November 2012 I have purchased the following, all NIB:

642-1 (my CCW)
M&P 40 FS
M&P 22
Shield 9 (better halfs)
Shield 40 (my NEW CCW)
SD40VE (truck gun)

Used - 66-4 4", Am now looking for a 686 and a 617.

And these don't count on this thread, but also bought a NIB Ruger LCR 38 (wife) and was practically given a Taurus 94 2", turned out to be a good little throw in tackle box gun.

I love this gun but have had a problem with the clip coming out when firing. Other than that though, it's an amazing gun.

My last two S&W's are a 15-2 2" and a 10-5 2" both blue and in 95% or better condition this bast year. Something about the older S&W's that the new versions are lacking. Bought my first duty gun, a model 10 HB in 1971 wish I had bought and kept more.

I bought a model 64-6 bobbed hammer 4" from a forum sales a month or so back. the member had a bunch for sale. I got a 4' and a snubby.
The 4" is the most accurate .38 spl I own. Including my adj. sight revolvers. It has a butter trigger. My wife hates revolvers because they hurt her fingers in DA. We took it to the range Friday and she shot 6 rounds at 25' at a 3 inch target and made a quarter shaped hole with 1 flyer but still in 3" circle. This revolver is amazing. It is not sexy or "cool" but boy it is a shooter.

I bought a NIB 617 last fall. Fit and finish and trigger with both sub-par. Especially sub-par for a gun of that price range. HOWEVER, with some work the trigger is now outstanding. And I can live with the fit and finish because the thing shoots great. It's a keeper.

M&P40c, new from Buds, couple of months ago (my first ever handgun), and picking up in about a week a new 67 from Impact Guns for my wife (maybe she'll let me shoot it occasionally also). Also a late-starter, at almost age 70. Love the 40c, can't wait to get the 67 - comments welcome on either firearm.

Some tips from a noobie S&W guy but i been into guns since the 60's.

My new S&W M58 and my new S&W M57 had two different feeling triggers, one was a little rough on the let off and the other one was smoother. I put some moly on the sear on the rough one and now there exactly the same. I like all my triggers to have the same feel.

Lets face it a brand new S&W revolver isn't going to have the trigger feel that a used S&W revolver from the 40's, 50's or 60's would have afterall its broken in and well used.

I lube all my guns with moly. BB

This thread needs more pictures!

Dan Wesson 15-2 and Smith and Wesson 629-6. Cousins of some sort, I'd say.

And it looks like I should have wiped off the fingerprints before I took the photo... Click it anyway for the full res version.

Since last September, I've bought a new 500 4 inch, a new Governor, a 5 inch 27-2, a nice M49, a like new Lew Horton 24-3, a NIB 544, and a NIB 331.

It's been a couple of weeks and I've got the itch to get something else.

What can I say but it took awhile before I found a Smith to bring home. Did bring a G20 and a 30-40 Krag before I found my irst model 19, a 19-7 ith a 2 1/2 barrel. Pickings are slim in my area on everythin. Heck there is a 3 month wait on sling shots.

Just learned S&W made a revolver in 38 Super so now I have to find one.

I purchased a new Model 60 Pro a couple of weeks ago and finally got around to shooting it over the weekend. I put 200 rds of .38 Special through it Sunday without any glitches or hiccups. I couldn't be more happy with the purchase. I took the great wood grips off and put them aside. In their place I installed some Hogue Monogrips. It now goes along with my 64-8 I picked up a couple months ago.

Here's a couple of pics of the gun. It looks great with the wood grips but the other pic is after the range session before I cleaned it up.

WOW! S&W is no doubt having a banner year!

I purchased a Bodyguard 38 and really like it. Everything about it I like.

Also my wife purchased a new 617 4". She loves it... me too. So I bought one in 6" for myself.

I just picked up an M&P Shield 9mm after looking for several months.
Range time only once, I shot about 80 rounds of misc ammo.
hard ball Winchester White Box, Hornady hollow point, silver tip - brand new gun ..... no misfires which I was impressed with it being a new gun.. The gun seems to pull to the right when dry firing but on target with loaded ammo, no problem....happy so far.
I'll be carrying it instead of my Glock 26.

I also have an M&P 15-22, only problem ever was cheap ammo causing failure to feed issues.

Model 686, nothing to go wrong
Model 629 Mountain Gun.. Nothing to go wrong, lots of rounds, no issues.
Model 41 .. only likes CCI std velocity...

I recently bought a new 686 3" Talo with the smooth cylinder, because I liked the looks. It had the dreaded canted barrel, so I asked Smith what they thought and they sent me a shipping label. It was returned within two weeks and S&W CS was very good. I still consider it a really nice gun, as well as looking cool. It has a smooth action and seems to be a very accurate gun. It has the IL, which I don't use, but don't mind. In the short time I've had it, it has become one of my favorite guns among the numerous Smiths that I have had. I would buy another new S&W, in a minute, and would recommend them to friends and family.

Last spring I bought a new 627 Pro. This is the one with the 4" barrel, not the PC version. Naturally it needed trigger lightening as they all do. I love the gun and compete with it monthly. It is accurate and arrived in flawless condition. No complaints.
I also bought a used (but unfired) 617-2 from the early 1990s on Gunbroker. It is a great shooter and looks great. Again, nothing to complain about.
