Hey guys! Hey I ran across a really nice S&W model 657-4 Mountain Gun, stainless with a 6" barrel, looks like Hogue black rubber grips, and I'd say the condition is 98%. What do you guys think this gun is worth, and are there any problems or anything I should know about? It is beautiful and I think it is priced right at $550. Any info is greatly appreciated!

To my limited knowledge, (mountain guns) are in 4" bbl only. Under 6 bones for an N-frame in great condition is OK by me.

Oh I didn't know Mountain Guns were only 4" and under. So it sounds like $500-$550 is an ok price, but no great find or anything huh? Thanks man.

If you think it is right priced that is all that matters.

What I think or any other Forum member should not influence your decision, unless you are looking to buy it an flip it for profit.

Buy it and enjoy it. Whenever you are ready to sell it, 10-20-30 years down the road, it will be worth more than you paid for it.

BTW, why did you think it was a Mountain Gun?

Don't forget that price's can be different by location, but I agree that if its a gun you want then you should pick it up, good used 41's are alot harder to find (I think) then a 44 or 357. Also the price can be different if the gun has the lock or not, what is the one your looking at? I'm going to guess because you took a pic of the back and there is no FP on the hammer that it has the lock.

I've just started learning about revolvers about a year ago, and I just like to research all guns I buy and get opinions and stuff like that to help me make a decision. I like the .41 Mag, and the gun looks almost new, but I don't have the knowledge you guys do. The reason I thought it was a Mountain Gun was because i saw a 657-4 that was.

I do not believe it is a mountain gun, every one I have seen has had a 4in tapered barrel. If this one checks out ok and you like it than you should get it. I think $550 is a fair price but all of the .41Mag in my area are $700 and up.

In my area that would be a VERY good buy.Go ahead and buy it and load it up with 220 WFN gas checked bullets from Dave Jennings over at Montana Bullet works in .411 diamneter.Load these in a Starline case with Rem 2 1/2 primers and 17.0 grs. of 2400.It'll shoot so good you want care what you paid for it.LOL

I guess I under-stated......BUY IT!!!!!! When you fall in love with it (it will happen fast), you should then find a 4" Mountain Gun. In my opinion (and that is so very important to me), The Mountain Gun is one of the best larger bore(and .357) working guns by Smith. Again, Just my opinion........Here is a pic of my Mountain Gun in .45 Colt for a visual of what a Mountain Gun looks like. I put JM grips on it and the -7 series has a shorter front sight base rib.

$550 for a 657 6" is a very good price especially if it is that clean...prices in gun shops usually start now in the high $600s and usually about the same on the auction sites.

If you don't reload (yet) then Georgia Arms makes a great hardcast round and Appalachian Ammunition also has some reasonably priced ammo....

This is my pair of 657 Mountain Guns...probably the favorite shooters of all the Smiths I own...

It's definitely NOT a Mountain Gun, but it is a good deal. If you like the caliber, buy it......
