Original Bloodwork 627-3 just sold for a song! Okay - a good deal.
Someone just got a Bloodwork UDR for less than 2K on Gunbroker. Looks darn near new!
I guess now would be a good time to buy with the competition leaned out for the holidays. I wonder what it would have brought after tax return time

Thanks for sharing the link as it's good to see they're out there for sale.
All I can say is I'm kinda glad it has sold. Otherwise I'd be tempted to buy it.

I am a little bothered by that hammer. The original bloodwork 357s had a hammer that sort of gapped from the frame at rebound rest. This one looks like the face of the hammer is still behind the rearmost frame edge.
I'm not sure I'd call that price a song, but it is pretty good for an early unfluted 8x 357.
Can somebody remind me how many original bloodwork models were made? I'm thinking there were only a couple of hundred, but I can't be sure.

Tell me about it. I looked in the "sold" section and couldn't even find one to compare.
Either the price has dropped or folks know enough to hold onto them.
I guess it pays to be a patient seller. Another couple months and that same auction becomes untouchable.

By the time the 2 5/8" snubbies were produced in 1999 the frame had already been lengthened to fix that issue.
However, that is not from the original run in 1999. The serial number is wrong for the first run, it would be an MCD prefix.
If you look at the date on the end label, it was manufactured October 24th of 2000
This may be an overrun from the revolvers that were engraved in "banknote" style.

I see...good eye. Maybe I should eat my comments then. Was that "over run" worth the price? I ssem to recall these went for absurd sums a few years ago.

That is a decent price. I go lucky and snagged mine for $1300 from someone that did not know what they had. Mine was the 7th made in the first run.

I would expect the new issue with the lock would drag the price of the originals down considerably. I was lucky enough to get one of the HMA serial numbers for a reasonable cost a few years ago. I must have missed the ad on this one. I have been watching the 627s, but did not see this one.

Other than the lock, what's the difference between this and the current 627PC with the 2 5/8 barrel?

The new ones with the IL aren't part of the original 302 guns, that's the big difference. Functionally they probably shoot just as well but there's a finite number of original guns, the new ones are nice guns but they're copies with locks. S&W brought them out to cash in on the demand for the originals and it worked, they've sold a bunch of them. But, just like the remakes of the M27s and others that S&W has come out with, nice guns but still copies with locks, they will never be as valuable or desirable as the "real" thing.
I had two originals for a while, one with an HMA serial number, one with a JBS serial number. The HMA had the gap in front of the hammer the JBS did not.
HMA on the left, JBS on the right-

Which did you prefer? To me, the gap looks like flawed engineering though I am sure it was considered. If there is to be no hammer-mounted fp, I'd like it to look more seamless.

No preference, really. I guess the HMA gun looks a little odd with the gap but I never fired the guns so I don't know if one felt or functioned different than the other. They were really nice and cool to own but once I had them in hand I knew I'd never carry them, too heavy for me. Now I have a 327 Night Guard that I carry a lot and really like, it'll never have the value or popularity of the others but it is a much more useable gun to me.

Well, you were brave to let them go. That's an impressive photo. I believe S&W put them in those nice cases so the owner could handcuff it to his or her wrist.

It's the truth. The movie Bloodwork came out in 2002, Clint Eastwood's character carried a 627 UDR. That is where that model's nickname came from, as well a surge of interest in it. The problem was that there was only 302 of them made so their rarity, combined with their sudden popularity, drove prices sky high and, as I mentioned before, pushed S&W to reintroduce the gun (with IL) a couple of years ago. As you can see, interest in the originals is still high.
