Default Question On M629 Price??

What does $625 for a 629-4, 6.5" barrel, in excellent condition sound like. Too high?? Would you go any higher? Help! ! Wanted (and still do) a 4" barrel but this one looks mighty good. The barrel on this one is ported also. Is that a + or a -?

They say the 6.5" is a lot better than the 4". I have a 4" 629-1, I just paid 700 for it a week ago, with 3 speed loaders and a bianchi owb holster.

I personally would buy it - I am even looking for the 6.5".

I am a 629 fan. (had a 629 w/4" barrel and sold it - dog-gone-it.) The $625 sounds pretty good to me, for this area, or for any area for that matter. My understanding of 629 is that the 6.5" would be the Classic w/full-lug. Is it stainless or nickel?, I think it must be stainless. Unless it been drug behind a pick-up truck for 20 miles, JUMP ON IT, quick.

Sounds like a good deal. I'm also assuming that it is a "Classic" model. My question is on the porting, is it the Smith "Power Port" (oval porting top of the barrel in front of the front sight), or is it MagnaPorted (trapezoidal ports on either side of the front sight), or is it some other style and who is it done by? In my opinion porting is all personal preference. It depends on if you don't mind the extra decibel levels that come with it compared to the less felt recoil.

And if the 4 inch is what you really want then you can always jump on this one and have a good smith shorten the barrel for you since you're already paying a fairly reasonable price.

I've always tried to get exactly what I want when I set out to purchase a firearm, sometimes you have to compromise and turn what you have into what you want.

Thanks kennyb and cornfed83. I won the bid for & $625. Cornfed, the picture on Gunbroker appears to be the Power Port on top of the barrel. There is nothing on the side of the front sight. I only noticed that it was ported when I was looking at the pictures this morning. I really wanted a 4" but I can live with this. I'll most likely be shooting .44Spls in it anyway. This, most certainly, will not be a carry weapon. I'll post some pics with it arrives. Thanks to the both of you for your feedback.

I traded into a 4" 629-8 a couple of weeks ago, looks unfired. The dealer wanted 750, I had something he wanted badly, he threw in a 1911 and I was out the door. $750-800 seems to be the bottom now. Used 629's have jumped in price over the last 5 years here.

I have a 6.5" classic 629-4 with the oval Power Port. I gave about $395 for it 4 or 5 years ago. Wear hearing protection.... HUH? What? I said wear hearing protection. It is loud. I went to the range to zero it in and they had just put up signs that said NO 50 Cal Pistols to keep the the S&W 500 riff raff out. After the 2nd shot a range officer was tapping me on the shoulder yelling no 50's. I opend the cylinder and handed him a 44 MAG round. He stared at the round for a while and said I'll let you shoot this time don't bring it back. I take it every time just to run a cylinder full through it. No one else has complained.

Now if I could just find a fellow with a freshly broken wrist that has a 500 for sale cheap I'd jump on it. Yep I'd love to be a member of the rif raff 500 club...
