I will say that I like contrast as well, ivory on a blued Smith is a great look. However, with that being said, I must admit to have some "stags" with little if any bark, on a nickel Smith and some curly maple grips on a nickel Smith. I also think those look good. I do not believe you can go wrong either way. After all, it is a Smith.

I can't bring myself to put BBQ stocks on a 642. I slapped a set of light colored wood J frame stocks on mine and pronounced it suitable. Now, on a nickled or deeply blued J frame? Oh, yeah...stag, ivory or even-dare I say it?-mother of pearl!

Indeed it is, Oldblood.
Where'd ya get those nice magnas?
I would like to get a set while I save up for for a set of Kuracs Ebony grips.
Maximumbob posted a set on a stainless gun last year and I just about died! I love the tuxedo look.

Take your pick, Bigger variety pack. All police trade-ins, all Altamont except ivory rd. butt, Boone Trading. Wore out a buffing wheel! But it is fun.

A11, got those at Altamont (silver/black), but they usually come thru more silver than black. I've requested they pick darker when I order, but they still aren't as nice as that pair. I'm going to call and ask Doug if they will make some all black, no silver. Hope they say yes, the black does have class.

I doubt you could legally buy true "Ivory" grips anymore; or for that matter, sell them.Just like true Whale Teeth pieces. What was once used for scrimshaw , is no longer legal. Most of the white grips are a plastic. We used to buy old pianos for the ivory keys and use them for scrimshaw, but those are long gone! The plastic reproductions vary in quality, so see before buying, so that you aren't disappointed. As I have aged, <g> I have changed to soft rubber Hogue grips for shooting that is easier on arthritic joints. I have bought the rosewood, ornamental stuff, the hard rubber and the ivory plasrtic in the past... but have resorted to the soft rubber grips lately as I have said. Blued, stainless, or chromed look neat with white, scrimshawed grips.

neither...
I would go with stag grips with bark on them as they do give the look of wood untill you get up close and depending on how much bark you want. Want to get a set for my 649.

There are some awesome pictures in this thread. Revolvers or older style looking guns need to be complimented with wood, ivory and leather holsters. As long as the grip is not rubber I will like them.
Rubber is for Berettas, not western-style revolvers! ....and I own a rubber gripped 96a1 Beretta.

Not quite white, but I think lighter colored stocks, whether ivory, stag, wood or quality polymer, look sharp and make a stainless or nickel gun look classy.

Have you considered rosewood or ebony? Eagle Grips makes a nice assortment worth checking out. I like wood on a gun, and either of these premium woods look great.

If you mean this one:
Then I have to confess that's a round butt gun wearing a square butt stock. I never did find a filler or adapter piece to fill in the open spot, so those Kuracs are still waiting for me to buy a suitable gun for them.

That looks familiar. I too suffer from the same problem as you, I have two sets of Kurac grips waiting for the right gun. I did manage to land my ebony grips on a 629 p&r.

Nowadays "ivory" is sometimes called "composite ivory" and is really a manufactured resin that looks like ivory. Real ivory has been banned in most countries since 1989. Real ivory looks good when new but slowly turns yellowish with age. And it swells and contracts with heat and/or moisture. It's not a very good material for gun grips since your hand has oil that can turn it brownish and start to deteriorate it (makes it soft). The composite ivory is like corian and will also stain if not coated with wax or a clear laquer, so it requires more care than wood or metal grips. But it does look nice on some guns.

White works...even if:
(1) Its not a S&W but a 1917 Colt .45
(2) Its Armalloy and not stainless
(30) The white is a little barky

Yes, Bob. That was the picture that did it to me. Thank you for putting it back up. I never get tired of looking at it.
I can't pass on an OM Birdshead Vaquero. Here is a really bad picture of the ones I've picked up. I prefer the stainless/black combo.
I'm not sure if I coined the phrase but I think "tuxedo style" fits.

Did you go with Altamont? Or are those Ajax? They look pretty sharp on that gun.

I've heard that these were referred to as Barbque Guns but I beg to differ. I have an inexpensive set of faux ivory on my Model 36 w/a TGrip. I put 100 rounds through it that way yesterday and it handled just fine.
