Centennials are NOT hammerless
So often these models, ie 442, 642 are called hammerless. They are anything but, they have a hammer that's internal.

What about the "shrouded hammer" models. I guess we have to classify those as partially hammered?

Of course S&W did market the early versions as the Safety Hammerless. Which is where the term came from and since the modern concealed hammer revolvers use the same concept, minus the grip safety, it's not really wrong to call them "Hammerless".

.... and 22 Long Rifle ammo isn't just for use in long rifles. I finally realized this when the local gun shop didn't have any .22 short pistol or .22 medium revolver ammo. I thought it was another ammo shortage for a minute there......

Probably not by hammers, although that probably all depends on how one looks at things.

Maybe it's just semantics, but isn't a concealed hammer a striker?

Not in S&W speak.
To me....anytime "pin-fired" or "striker" comes up...it brings me back to the Lorcin. The last time a guy brought me a Lorcin to fix, I repaired it with a bent nail....gave it back to him and told him to never ever admit that he or the gun was ever at my place.
The Centennial series definitely has an enclosed hammer and all the lock-work that a normal revolver has. A pin-fired gun has a heavy firing pin which is launched when the trigger is pulled. It has no hammer. In some cases....they like to fall even when the trigger is not pulled. But...I get your point.

The SCSW 3rd defines hammerless as follows:
"A revolver with the hammer concealed entirely within the frame; cannot be fired single action. Primary examples are the top-break safety hammerless, or lemon squeezer, models and the Hand Ejector Centennials."
Based on that definition, I would say that Centennials ARE considered hammerless.

Wow! Thanks for explaining that to us.
I think we should get together and file a class action suit for fraud against S&W! They told me it was hammerless!

Great now we are going to have to call the hammerless J frames something different like, CHR (Concealed Hammer Revolver) or maybe SCH (Secretly Concealed Hammer)...EITHER WAY AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT HAVE THAT STUPID LOCK ON THE SIDE IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER TO ME....LOL
