i saw a 657 Mountain Gun
yesterday while traveling around looking at local gunshops with one of my sons. No lock and for $699 so bargains are still out there(to me any how).

I gave $500.00 for mine in the spring of 2009. It had sat at a north Georgia gunshop for over a year with a $700.00 price tag on it. The shop owner was glad to part with it for what he had in it.

ColbyBruce, I left this one laying where I found it simply because of the round butt? I take a XX glove and this just won't work for me. I really think S&W believes we are now all Japanese and have small hands?

I had one of those in my hands many years ago.
Should have bought it as I almost had the cash.
Gun fund is quite low these days. The Obama economy finally caught up with me last year.
Love those .41 and .45 Mountain Guns.

Stocks are easy to switch out, though they can be costly. You might want to give that Mountain Gun another look.

A set of Ahrends round to square conversion grips and you are in business. I put the Tactical Finger Grooves on mine but the smooth round to squares are likely bigger yet.

Like the majority of N frames over the last 20 years, 657-4 Mountain Guns were sold with a rubber Hogue round to square conversion stock. A square butt N frame Hogue has exactly the same shape. The round butt just allows smaller stocks to be installed.
As far as the price goes, $600-$800 will buy most of the stainless N frames. A .41 Mountain Gun would be hard to find if you were searching for one, but .41 is pretty much a reloaders' cartridge that never was a big seller, so it wouldn't suprise me to see one sell any where in that range. I think ColbyBruce was very lucky to get one for $500. Another member has been posting for a year or two that he can't find one, so I'd be tempted because I like less common models.

N frame target stocks look and feel stupid when installed on round butt guns. Do it and you will see what I mean.
S&W should have never gone to round butt only on the N frames, it's just not right.

I left it lay as I found because I already own a square butt 57-0.
I figure it don't get no better than this.

I would put my nickel four-inch M57 up against your blue one.
Very smooth trigger and looks real good too.
Also accurate.
My first .41 was a six-inch blue M57. That's a fine gun too.
Shot it first at bowling pins and then in steel plate matches.
Lots of fun.

I bought a 657-4 Mountain Gun from another forum member here in October last year that is in like new condition. It was funny - I had been looking for one for months, and had just told a friend if he ever saw one to inform me. It wasn't two minutes later, one appeared in the classifieds section on this forum, and I was lucky enough to get it for what I consider a very fair price. I still have not fired it, but it is probably my most "looked at" revolver. It's my 4th 41 mag. I intend to shoot it soon. wyatte

Yes, I should of said "to me" but, while nickel is the most durable of applied gun finishes, I prefer blue simply because I occationally hunt with my pistols.
For about a decade now I've enjoyed this forum for it's outstanding photos, too bad you didn't grace us with a pic of yours?
