Question about Model 66 snubs
Just looking around at the 2.5" M66s. They are what I really like in a revolver, specifically: stainless, .357, and snub nose.
My question is, were all of the snub 66s configured as round butt revolvers? Just from looking around on various sites, I didn't see any of them as square butt. Not that I would prefer the SB style, but just curious.
Thanks.

I never saw a SB, but that doesn't mean they are not out there. At one time a dealer or a department could get anything they wanted, if they ordered enough of them to make it worthwhile. Maybe they still can.

The only SB snub 66 (or was it a 19) I've ever seen was in the Eastwood flick "The Gauntlet." It was the piece carried by Clint's character.

I do not remember ever seeing a 66 SB Snub.
BUT, someone on here will probably have one.
I have a M15-5 Square Butt Snub. You would have figured it would have been a round butt.

Folks here have posted photos of their square-butt 66s with a 2-1/2" barrel screwed on. It has been a year or two since I have seen them - maybe more. IIRC, they mentioned some problem with the way the barrel fit up to the frame, possibly with the ramp base for the front sight blade. Seems like something wasn't quite like they wanted.
I have never heard of the factory providing 2-1/2" square-butt guns, but anything is possible with S&W.

I believe it was a 66 and I read somewhere that it was made up for the movie. They put a 2 1/2 in. barrel on a SB frame.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I just put a 66-3 2.5" on layaway. Getting it for $375 at a local gun shop.
Pics when I get it.

Back in the day anyone could get a square butt Model 66. All they had to do was send their 4" 66 back to S&W and have them replace the barrel with a 2=1/2" barrel.

I have a 66-2 with a 2.5" barrel and square butt. I doubt it left the factory that way originally but "could" have been sent back to have the barrel cut or replaced. Makes a great shooter, nice full grip, target sights, great action. I also have a 19 with a 2.5" barrel and the standard round butt that is significantly easier to conceal even though the only difference between the two is the back side of the grip.
